i take a sm57, then hold it to my mouth and hiss into the mic....

i then take that sample and loop it under my mixes, and people say the really love the sound of that analog tapehiss.

Lol. Not talking about pissing on mixes, my goal is actually to get the good harmonic distortion that tape can give you. Much better than digital distortion when mastering your own stuff.

Anybody here with a brain?

I took my at4047 and farted 4 inches away,
added with eq and compression
you wouldnt belive the 8o8 i came out with!
Must i say incredible warmth!

I also used the same fart sample, Sustained it and created a cool bass multi patch.
heh

OceanMan:

I believe the friendly slutz are suggesting that you do a search for the many threads already in existence that will answer your question very thoroughly (they are just too polite to say it).

All jokes aside, You added plugins to the list so would say urs saturation,

But if you want to get serious with analogue distortion i think you should buy or start saving for the Anamod Tape unit which emulates it remarkably well!

it all depends on budget,

as for hardware there are choices that reflect several budgets:

1) portico 5042
2) fatso and ubk fatso
3) anamod, which is probably the best and most expensive
4) new Lipinski comp that works like 660 with tape simulation button
5) slate audio dragon compressor also offers tape simulation

and also, take a 57 and hold it to your mouth, then hiss into it and then loop that sample under your mixes

My opinion...

"Best" analog: Anamod ATS-1
"Best" digital: UAD Fatso Sr. (Like this one better than the stock Fatso)

I've got my eye on the Anamod. I just have to swallow dropping so much change on one piece. (I wouldn't do it for a 1073, so this is a big purchase for thrifty ol' me)

Tape simulation

So far ,

I have just tried various products on different tracks , and if they work well , I keep them and if they don't , I delete and start over .

I use the Crane Song products , so I have the hardware thing , and they work nicely ,
but not on every thing , so I try the Waves plugins , and if that is not working ,
I go to the UAD Fatso plugin .

I use a lot of analog gear so my tracks are very nice " as is " and the tape thing
is not always desirable .

I use the Digi one - Reel Tape Suite I think it's called. Sounds pretty damn impressive - correctly applied. Generally, it really helps bring ultra-fast transients back into line, I find this it's most useful purpose. A nice range of tweaks and subtle variations - i'm really diggin on the 'Swiss' setting at the moment, and a 3 o'clock bias setting!

Massey got a great tape sim, and you can download it for free for an unlimited test use (it won't save what you dialed though)

I always thought Magneto did a pretty good job. Unfortunately, I don't think it's available anymore for PT. Is it?

And that emulates tape?
What is about the things which happen frequency wise and the saturation fact that it soft clips the signal?

Anyway if the OP does not expect to get real tape sound but something what works in this direction I found the DUY DAD tape the best of all simulations I checked and compared with my master tape recorder.

D U Y

Myself I think DUY DAD tape is too expensive and thats the reason I did not bought it.

or, Take a cassette tape and place it into an available pci slot of your computer.
Then within PT, buss all tracks to the "tape slot" and walla, everything you do will have the SAME sonic qualities as your copy of Jagged Little Pill.
Works every ****in time.

Actually it's not that stupid. I own an Anamod ATS-1 and i tell you the hiss knob is, among all features, what does the most significant job at making the unit sound like tape…

Not stupid but I guess if the Anamod is calling his self "TAPE SIMULATOR" there is going on more as just "HISS" may also nice and round transients form soft clipping?

I'm really liking a little bit of Bootsy's Ferric - more than Fatso, just wish wow & flutter had been included.

tape doesn't have to mean hiss..

if you want the sound of tape, why the hell wouldn't you just buy a reel to reel? You can get some multitrack units extremely cheap on eBay now, doesn't have to be the best of the best, but you can put your tracks to that, record them back in, and blend (or not) with the digital signal to taste

You could do this for less than the cost of the hardware / software alternatives and it's FUN
