API 512c Leds. How to read them?

I know people are going to say just use your ears but why would API put the leds on.

I have a 512c and a2d recently purchased. I am wondering what the different colored leds are supposed to indicate. Does green mean that you are not pushing the output transformer into distortion and yellow mean that you are to varying degrees. I can hear the compressing and grit that starts to happens as you push the output but am wondering about the significance of the vu.

I know some people are going to say just use your ears but why would API put the leds on?

Thanks.

I don't believe there is an intended correlation between the meter LED color changes and how hard the transformer is driven, although obviously the hotter the signal the harder the drive. The meter is just to give you an idea about what the signal output level is, so as to help set the gain correctly. I find that lightly hitting the red can be nice for certain instruments like drums and bass, and for other things I like to keep the meter in the green. If you keep peaks at around +4 on the meter, you will have a good solid signal to drive other devices down the chain without hitting them hard (depending on headroom of course).

Thanks. I appreciate the tips. I am going to try hitting the red a little sometimes and see what happens. +4 or a little less has been the general setting I have used for the last couple of weeks on most things.

The Red LED is around +18dB, 512c clips at +31dB..so you still have plenty of headroom..ON the OUTPUT..
