If it's true, it's a smart move. The G5 may well stay vaporware indefinitely.

However good the G4 may be on a per clock basis, the MHz speed gap is becoming a pretty big PR problem for Apple concerning the new Mac customers they are hoping to attract. As soon as you have to start trying to explain to a computer newbie why the bigger number is actually worse, you're already paddling upstream.

By stuffing 4 G4s in a box, even at 1GHz they can claim 4GHz worth of CPU with a straight face, regardless of the diminishing returns on multiple SMP. Quad G4s on OSX with well written apps will be some serious power.

It's the only concrete way they can compete in the MHz wars on a PR level. Good move, IMO.

Don't bother with the logic of power vs megahertz. This is America, the land of the 10MPG, 6000LB Ford Excursion hauling mom and 1 kid all over God's green earth. Bigger must be better..............

But of course the British do things a little differently.

For example, the Westfield Megabusa:-

175BHp @ 9800RPM (!)
0-60mph 3.2 seconds
Engine capacity 1300cc!!

No it's a car..

http://www.westfield-sportscars.co.uk/

Click on showroom, then factory built cars then Megabusa...

In a desparate attempt to get back on topic:-

What about two of those linked via Steinbergs "System Link".

Alishad had better enable multi processing pronto, and remove artificial limits otherwise they stand a good chance of going the way of the Dooo Doo (Down the Pan)

More like insanely.
I recently saw a feature in a Pommy bike mag that had hotted versions of the bike this motor is sourced from.
220hp at the rear wheel, which could be easily smoked at 80+mph:eek:
Only in Britain.

Dave.

re:Quadra's....funny thing is, with the old quadra's you could actually buy nubus cards w/CPU's on them such that you could have up to 7 brains in a box. only thing was, they were seperate brains, like having multiple computers where you had to switch between the screens to control each one....not many CPU's working together on a given task. still a funky, cool ability though...

like Apple, dislike Jobs...and i never can get too excited about mac rumors...

don't we need the soft to be able to "use" all that horsepower .... allready with dual processors softs actually taking advantage of them are rare .... 4 processors ???? dunno ..... I'd rather see the G5 ....

According to MOTU, DP3 can take full advantage of SMP with more than two processors, and presumably, when things are finally OSX-ready, this multi-threading will be native and transparent for everything.

By then I'll hopefully have made enough dough with my dual GHz Mac to cure my GAS...

Not possible. Do you know of anyone who has enough toys? The more you have, the more you want.

That's why I'm all about Farhvegnugen (however you spell it..ha). Yea, living in Philadelphia and frequenting NYC quite often, it is almost painful to see all these damn SUV's with the big ass rims, SUCKING the gas out of this country, and then everyone wonders why we are so dependent on the oil producing countries...

ANYWAY!!!!
