Well Ive listened to all your advice and spent all my money on mics, but for the life of me I still cant get a good kik sound. All I get is weird "thonk" type sound. I just cant imagine what Im doing wrong. See picture

Are you sure it's not a phase problem?

With that many mics on the kick, you are almost certainly suffering from phase issues. I'd try a single mic, probably the 421 for starters, and then consider cutting a hole in the front head, large enough to get the mic inside.

As far as micing the module, it helps to place the mic near openings in the case.

Best of luck in all your endeavors along these lines.

Personally I would try and tactfully suggest to the drummer that he tunes it differently! What about a mic on the beater head?

heh

Try taping that RE20 to the beater itself, no more thud sound after a few bars.

Have you experimented with different preamps? Try a Vipre in "Simmons" mode.

That's what happens when you let a drummer mic his own kit.

I think there's an AES regulation banning drummers from engineering chores.

BE NICE! There are a lot of us here.

I give adamcal extra credit for actually attaching cables to the mic for this.

It must be something about the weather down your way..............................I've heard that a lot of Melbournian studios practice that method of drum micing.

Use a wood beater on the kick pedal, move the "drum" out of the way, set up a D-112 and just let the beater smack right into the mic. (this is also known as the headless bass drum micing technique)

That green rubber bumper on the D-112 and a wooden beater will give a satisfying thump!

If you need more click, use a 57 instead.

Are you an idiot!?? You're trying to mic the trigger! It doesn't make a real bass drum sound, it makes a click, and also makes a signal to the drum machine that you mic'd (dumbass) and then that turns into a signal you can put in a computer or 8 track or whatever. You don't mic the trigger or the machine! The whole point is that you don't need to use a mic!

who's the dumbass here?

Either you are responding to someone elses post or you can't tell a joke when you see one.

Duh!!!

There are many threads about getting a good bass drum click and they always seem to end up with someone saying "get rid of the front head" "when the beater hits the mic, that'll click!"

All your base are belong to us.

Therefore, I immediately associated you with the kindred spirit of Alphajerk, a notable and notorious moderator here.
