Whenever I REALLY want to impress a client, I break out the SM57. It just has that wow factor. I can't count the amount of times a 57 has helped me to get laid, chicks dig that mic. Try painting one gold and attaching it to a pendant to get respect on the street.
Does anyone hate the SM57s on snares and distorted guitars as much as I do?
No. Depends what music you're recording. For metal it has this dark bottom end I love and probably why most metal bands use it. I also have a Sennheiser e609 and while it's not a bad mic it's way too bright sounding no matter where I place it and it just has no bottom end. It's easier to add mids and highs later but impossible to add low end.
I don't hate SM57's. They have their applications. I recently recorded some overdriven electric guitars through a Vox AC15H1TV amp. I started off with a Royer R121 and a Sennheiser e906. The e906 wasn't cutting it so I put a 57 on it along with the R121 and it sprung to life. A MD421 was going to be my next choice but the 57 sounded so good I just left it.
I don‘t hate it, I just don‘t know many uses where it would be my 1st choice, at least on its own.
I have a long list of things that must be right before I put it up on a gtr speaker, and I still haven‘t found the snare setup where I would reach for it first.
Amazingly, I find it pretty useful for many things in live use, possibly due to how I usually set my master EQ...
Well i use to think i hated it. So I used anything else i could find, especially on guitars cabs and snare.
I rediscovered it lately on guitar, with good olds amps : bassman 50 silver, ac30, that kind of thing... Its hi mid peak doesn't hurt me that much anymore. Or i become deaf ... anyway on snare i like beyer m500 more.
I'd be willing to bet that most of the haters loved sounds that came from 57s, but just don't know it. Not that actually using one is synonymous with loving someone else's use of one.

Of course that's true. I have asked many friends about things that sound good to be told a 57 was used. I just do not understand that mic, and have never been able to make it sound the way others do, save for one record that I can recall.
I used to think that would happen to me, but it didn't. I went through a time where I'd try them a couple times a year, but I'd always be bothered by something. I don't even own any (that haven't been ruined by a stray drumstick) anymore.
I like the 57 on both snare and distorted guitars. I own or have tried many of the other popular snare contenders and always come back to the 57 mainly because it handles bleed from the hat pretty well.
Does a M201 sound better? Sure...if the snare if being played by itself and you are taking samples. Put both in the context of a kit and the 57 sounds like it has a gate on it in comparison.
They're really not that great sounding are they. 57's. Kinda midrangy but not too clangy. I've always thought they sound boxy on snare. Not to say you can't make one sound good...
I posted a couple of 58 vocals just now, on the "What vocal mic did you use today" thread.
(to compare Launcher vs. Focusrite Air Button)
But I always wonder how much better, the recordings would be on another mic.
Chris
P.S. I stayed with the 58 on this, as they're so popular for home/stage use.
