Which vocal mic???

Hi folks need a bit of help. I'm going to record a guy in a few weeks who has a tone of voice somewhere between Tim & Jeff Buckley via Nina Simone and some early British Jazz singers. Also slides into some Plant / Cornell territory aswell. I don't have a my own selection to choose from but are prepared to hire whatever I need. Have tried some scratch vocals thro a SM58 and a cheap condensor mic, but to be honest neither really reflect what is happening in the room with this guy. He goes from really quiet and sensitive to really loud and powerfull.

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks

You might consider using two mics at the same time for him- You set one mic and compressor for the quiet stuff, and the other mic and compressor for the loud stuff. It usually works out better then trying to get one mic/compressor setting to work for both.
As to which mics? Thats a hard one..... I'd try out several for each setting and pick the ones that sound best for each volume.

Cheers mate, never thought to try two mics, sound kind of obvious really.
Somedays I'm slower than others.
