eh... not to knock the wind out of anyones sails, but I went to a presentation put on by this guy in the late 90's in Poway, CA where he was trying to attract investors and this thing sucked. It didn't do what he claimed it would and the "speakers" were nothing more than the little emitters that were used for old fashioned television remote controls when they were RF generated. I kid you not. He just arranged several of them in a cluster. I remember being VERY unimpressed. The sound was very directional, sure, but that's what high frequencies are - directional.

I came out of the meeting thinking "snake oil salesman". Heh. I had forgotten all about his bull**** "amazing, revolutionary" speakers until I saw this thread.

During the presentation, he CLAIMED that these things covered the full frequency spectrum but needed a "special amplifier" that "happened" to be on the fritz during his demonstration. Yeah. Right. He talks a good game, but this thing is a waste of time - unless he has radically changed the model. But somehow, I doubt it.

sound is transmitted on a straight line, just like a laser. if you ears are not in that line, you won't hear a thing.

no matter how far you are from the transmitter, there's no signal degradation as the sound is "formed" next to you ear.

this technology will soon be mass produced

this is mind-blowing

old news...The Military has used technology like this for many years or decades some for audible weapons...

I'm guessing that these work on the principle of heterodyning ultrasonic beams. Which is probably why the dog likes it.

Two frequencies can beat against each other to create upper and lower beat frequencies. 12 string guitar players know this effect very well. With a little bit of electronics, you can frequency modulate (FM) an ultrasonic signal so that when it beats against another ultrasonic carrier, the lower beat frequency is within the audio range.

I guess for stereo you need 3 ultrasonic transducers - a central carrier, and left & right FM signals. Being ultrasonic, they will be very directional (far more directional than tweeters). You only get to hear them when they combine in the air - therefore you can target the intersection of the beams anywhere in the room.

If that's not how they work, then i'm an idiot and should be ignored.

I remember Steve St. Croix writing in about this in Mix mag, almost a decade ago. I guess its finally coming to fruition.

I shudder to think of the implications with this new tech - propaganda can now be attainable on sooooo many levels, and to think of how it can and will be used to influence people on a multitude of levels - kinda makes me wanna move back north and hide in the woods...

Extremely interesting concept, and one that I hope can be used wisely...

this is indeed the same beast

1999$

but here comes the sad part, from the manual of the AudioBeam :

Safety instructions

Possible danger for persons with cardiac pacemakers!
Possible danger of hearing defects!
At a distance of less than four meters in front of AudioBeam, ultrasonic
frequencies may disturb the function of cardiac pacemakers and may
cause damage to the hearing!
Make sure that no-one can come closer than four meters to AudioBeam –
especially when mounting the unit movably or rotatably.

AudioBeam generates heat! Make sure that the air vents of the unit are not
covered or blocked!
Keep AudioBeam away from heat sources and never expose AudioBeam to
direct sunlight! Maintain a minimum distance of 1meter between
AudioBeam and combustible materials.

Paul Lueg filed a right over the patents in 1933-34 (?) (sorry, can't seem to remember the exact date).

I think Beyerdynamic or Sennheiser built a working prototype back then.

and Sennheiser sells this thing already, has been doing it for a couple of years.

(edit: AvS linked to the AudioBeam product site already)

yes, that makes a total of 3 reasons. I suppose you could combine them into 1 by selling people in the military sex. Wouldn't be the first time...
