I haven't read the whole thread, but has anyone mentioned Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks? Particularly the classic "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away".

Many moons ago there was a band in NYC called the Central Park Sheiks that had a song whose chorus went
If the key of E is the people's key
Then what is the key of the bourgeoisie

Anybody have the lyrics to that?

And Queens "Bohemian Rhapsody" is probably the most elaborately told joke in pop music history.

Silver Jews have a song on their "Tanglewood Numbers" CD called "How Can I Love You If You Won't Lie Down."

And "Punks in the Beerlight" begins,

"Where's the paper bag that holds the liquor?
Just in case I feel the need to puke."

Sheer poetry.

Oh yeah, National Lampoon's "Lemmings"! A fantastic spoof of Woodstock with Christopher Guest, Chevy Chase, John Belushi. It was the first time Belushi did his Joe Cocker impersonation.

Walk Hard

One more...if you can get your hands on it, Tom Waits' sort of unofficial bootleg, usually referred to as Dime Store Novels, live at Ebbets Field in Denver, in 1974...he's rather intoxicated throughout, and his between song banter is second to none, particularly when he tells the story about the 2 hobos...give it a listen
Yeah, the soundtrack of Walk Hard is very amusing. Most of the tunes (I can't recall if all) were written by Marshall Crenshaw - and I think he was even Oscar or Grammy-nominated for the soundtrack.

It's funny, because I found out about that when I saw his name in the credits, but also later on when my girlfriend's dog-trainer told me about it - Marshall Crenshaw is her brother-in-law (when she sees often) and when that movie came out, it was big 'fam' news.

Anyway, even though it's 'just' comedy, I maintain that talent is shown when one has to write for genres that are not normally part of one's repitoire.

Also, a big 'thumbs up' for William Shatner's "You'll Have Time". That is one freaking hilarious tune.

Finally, "White and Nerdy" always cracks me up. Kudos to Weird Al for that one (in a long line of well-executed parodies).

that line is great, but what makes it so hilarious is kg's deadpan answers..."he does not need" and "f*cking"

...and lest we forget

The Illinois Enema Bandit (originally on Frank Zappa's "Live in New York" LP, circa 1977 and later on "Lather").

I can scarcely mention T.I.E.B. and not mention "Punky's Whips". I would be remiss were I not to mention "Punky".

Anything by M.C. Hawking. It's so funny it almost justifies the existence of rap.

Almost!

First time I heard "The Mighty Steven Hawking", I nearly fell out of my chair.

Jacques Brel's "Tango Funèbre" makes me chuckle every time.

Listen to the Scott Walker version "Funeral Tango" for a good English translation (and delivery) of Brel's wonderfully wry sense of humour.
