A squid eating dough in a polyethelene bag is fast and bulbous.

A carrot is as close as a rabbit gets to a diamond.

- D.v.V. (The Cap'n)

Funny funny is hard in a song, because what's funny the first time you hear it usually gets pretty irritating after a fews listens, but a good song is in fact someting you want to listen to a bunch of times. I thought Disco Duck, Kinko the Clown and Kung Fu Fighting were the **** when I was 11.

+1 for Flight of the Conchords (compulsory viewing), and Tenacious D.

Some of the songs that got me hooked on music as a very little kid were comedy songs.

Right Said Fred (the song that George Martin engineered, about moving a piano). George Martin's Parlorphone label did a lot of comedy acts before he found The Beatles (who are very funny in their own uber cool way). There is a BBC compilation of old stuff that is still hilarious.

Anyone remember "The Streak" by Ray Stevens - when Streaking was a global phenomenon ...

I actually have very fond memories of C W McCaul, of Convoy fame. I got his albums on CD for old times sake, and they still sound good and make me laugh. I'm pretty much a sucker for 1970's recordings anyway - and while not a huge country fan, this is classic comedy.

New Zealand had it's own local comedy hero - John Clark aka Fred Dagg. He recorded a bunch of songs in a single day that became local hits - possibly his uniquely kiwi humour would be lost on the rest of the world ...

But here is my dirty little secret ... I'm a huge Wierd Al Yankovic fan. I know some people just don't get him - but in my eyes he is a genius. He is a welcome antidote to taking life and music far too seriously.

Before anyone bags him - I say can you do better? He is a good accordian player, and a skilled musician (watch him in the studio on his DVD - he is a perfectionist, but they must have sooo much fun).

I seriously believe Wierd Al must have studied Frank Zappa and C W McCaul (and probably most genres of comedy and music for that matter). His lyrics, while straight out of Mad magazine most of the time, are very carefully crafted. This is comedy, first up, and I think he is a genius.

Seriously.

Weird Al is most definitely a genius.

Every song on "Off the Deep End", especially the non-parodies = choice.

In no particular order:

Tom Lehrer's The Vatican Rag. Just hilarious. Probably offensive to some, but that's the nature of comedy.

Lots of things by Big Daddy. Remember the insane premise upon which their parodies were based? They were a 50's cover band that somehow got squirreled away for a few decades. When they came back, the only way they could make a living was to play today's hits (well, hits from the 80's and 90's) in the style of the 50's. Example: Playing Madonna's Like A Virgin in the style of Frankie Avalon's Venus.

Rosie by Jackson Browne (thinly disguised masturbatory humor). I still laugh out loud when I hear it. Horny roadie loses girl to the "talent," so he goes back to his room to TCB himself. But, his five fingered friend's nickname is "Rosie," so some people think he's talking about a backup girlfriend.

Everything from This Is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, etc. Those guys are great.

Adam Sandler's Chanukkah Song.

Spike Jones' Der Fuehrer's Face.

The Gaston Song from Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Really, Alan Menken was a shot in the arm for Disney when it comes to movie music. The Sherman Brothers were the last real music talent they had until Menken and Ashman came along.

Speaking of Menken and Ashman, the dentist's song from Little Shop of Horrors is great, too. "I thrill when I drill a bicuspid. It's swell, though they tell me I'm maladjusted." Pure genius.

+1 for Tom Lehrer, especially 'so long mom'

Pretty Pussy- Plies. I was on the road, and my Itunes was picking up someone else in the hotel's Itunes library. I saw the title, listened to the song, and immediately bought it . possibly the the most blatantly nasty song since 'let's get butt naked and f*ck' by Ice-T

The Bonzo Dog Band - especially The Intro and the Outro, 'Adolf Hitler on vibes... Count Basie orchestra on triangle "TING" thankyou!" etc.

Bonzo Dog Band: In the Canyons of Your Mind - best/worst guitar solo EVER

Python: the Gary Glitter version of Agrarian History (Neil Innes at the helm, I believe)

Rutles: Cheese and Onions, You're So Pusillanimous (oh yeah!)

Tom Waits: Frank's Wild Years, Edward (off the CD 'Alice'), Step Right Up... many more

10CC "The Worst Band in the World", "Oh Effendi", "I Bought A Flat Guitar Tutor" "I Wanna Rule the World"

Godley and Creme "I Could Eat Sandwiches of You"

Dan Hicks "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?"

Flight of the Conchords, "Bowie's in Space" "Fou de Fa Fa"

Lyle Lovett "She's Leaving Me (Because She Really Wants To)

Almost ALL of Roger Miller's awesome stuff... And Zappa of course.

AND lastly, the CD I'm working on right now. To be announced. Funny Stuff.

I kissed a girl and I liked it... Every time I hear that I just start giggling uncontrollably, it's just a crazy song. One time I saw her live on TV and during the song she jumped onto 2 giant cherries on stage, grabbed her tits and said "how do you like my cherries?". I could not stop laughing for 5 minutes.
