You're favorite estoteric, off-brand, or avant-garde gear....

I've looked for a thread like this but haven't found anything so here goes. I'm curious about your favorite off-brand, esoteric, pieces of outboard gear, stuff that the average slut may not by familiar with.

Like many people, I started my recording years around local studios and Guitar Center recording rooms (which never worked). Ten years ago, I though Avalon, Universal Audio, and SSL were the be-all and end-off of equipment. Then I discovered Chandler, Thermionic, GML, and others.

Today's some of my favorite pieces -- such as my Shadow Hills GAMAs, Aurora GTQCs, Avedis E27s, and Alta Moda Unicomp -- are even less widely known.

I'm curious: What do you love that I (and others) may not know? I'm particularly interested in some of the stuff that may be more familiar to the European market (like AI Elektronic).

One note: I'm not suggesting in any way that boutique gear is superior to mass-marketed gear. I'm just trying to broaden my knowledge of the market.

Looking forward to your responses,

Adam

Before someone yells about my grammar, that tile should say "your", not "you're".

this is a guitarded response, however, I picked up a Sinmarc 50 watt guitar head in Spain that kills my marshall for marshall tone. 450 Euros brand new and the amp is housed in a nice wooden frame, not the standard black tolex...I'd love to pick up their SVT knock-off if I ever get the chance....It says 'hand made' in Spanish on the back, but it's clearly a printed circuit board design w/2 EL34s & 3 12ax7s.

Western Electric, especially equipment for "class-a lines" amplifiers equalisers transformers. Built for the ages, like everything pre-1984 BellSys.

Anything from Cinema Engineering or Shallcross. Step attenuators.

General Radio oscillator, pulse gen, noise gen, gates.

Cheers.

Auditronics PEQ 82, if you can find one.

Chandler is high on my list of current gear designers making killer stuff (have and love the TG1, and TG Channel Mk I). Purple's gotta good track record with me as well. So does Anthony DeMaria Labs (have and love the ADL 1000 and ADL 670, used to work in a studio with the ADL 600 preamp).

Naiant microphones... not totally under the radar, but worth the mention. Any DIY sub-kick mic.

Oops.. was this outboard only? Sorry. The only strange piece of outboard that I have is an old Shure "Professional Microphone Mixer" that gets pretty gnarly on loud sources.

Kajaani 10ea-series mixer. I donΒ΄t think they are known outside Finland (and not really even here). Handmade modular mixer from the seventies. Built in compressor-card in masterbus is one of the most transparent sounding comps IΒ΄ve ever heard. Full of sweet sounding Lundahl-transformers. It has cute reindeer-logo on it too.

Ha ha! I remember that.. A very interesting dynamic equalizer. Good call!

I'd like to nominate the truly wonderful Sherman Filterbank. Made in Belgium. Ultimate abuse machine.

I'm a big fan of my old Klein+Hummel UE1000 EQs.
UE means "Universal-Entzerrer" which is German for "Universal Equaliser", if you will.

They're huge beasts.... one mono EQ is a 7U / 19" mammoth, really heavy too.
Each UE1000 has 6 filters / bands.

They're not tube (the tube one used to be the UE400, featuring something like 14 tubes or so, but nevertheless being much smaller), but they're great. Amazing headroom.

Foote Control Systems. Excellent units.

I work almost exclusively with pre-1970 American broadcast preamps, which the masses have generally ignored. Tons of variety there.

valley people commander

Not sure if it falls into the esoteric category.
I don't see to many others using it.

I have 2 valley people commanders in a 2 slot rack. Wish I had more.

One of the weirdest coolest sounding limiters ever IMHO.

Also the original Joemeek vc1 brick tabletop unit.
A one trick pony, but it's a good trick.

Sounds way different than the later rack mount VC-1 units to me.

+1 on D&R... I love the pre's, eqs and mix bus. The topology/ui of the consoles are a little tricky though, and the automation is whack.

At Sound Images we had some outboard mic pres from a company called "Studio Technologies" that sounded very cool on voice.

At QCA I sometimes used an Ortofon accelleration limiter (a vinyl mastering tool designed to prevent overshoot) as a kind of de-esser/signal massager.

Studio Technologies MicPreEminence is the preamp. It's a double balanced design great for improvements.

MXR blue graphic EQ's, those are really great designs, a swinging input proportional Q that blends into a smooth EQ curve no matter how the sliders are set. I have a few I rebuilt using a large power supply, polyprop film caps for the filters, very low noise NSC opamps, direct coupled, balanced I/O, 200k hz bandwidth.

MCA SP-1 mics, for $39.95, how can you go wrong?
