Ambient noise reduction - where best in the chain?

To lower my open mic noise floor, I have a windowing expander/gate in my audio chain, directly out of the mic pre before the signal reaches any other gear before hitting the DAW. My question is, would this device be better placed as one of the last things in the signal chain, directly in front of the board before it goes to the sound card? Is it better where it is, right after the pre? Or does it make no difference at all?
