Bac Vox under lead question?

I know a common practice for Backround Vox is to heavy compress them. But backround vox are supposed to sit behind the lead. Im confused because, doesnt compressing something help to bring vox more up front,so why would you heavily compress something like backround vox that are supposed to be behind the lead?

Not necessarily. What it can also do is to even the BV's out so that they are 'contained' thus allowing you to tuck them in under the main vocals without losing them in places.

You don't want to leave much dynamic variation to them because if you want to have them low in the mix you'll lose the low passages.
For instance if you have the peaks at -10 you may end up having the quiet phrases at -20 without compression and you'll not be able to hear them
