greetings from russ elevado and nikka costa

what's up gearslutz,

how's everyone doin? i hope you're all really well...

i thought some of you folks might want to hear some good old analog recordings. so if you haven't bought it already, then go out and pick it up after you finish reading this.

we finished up nikka costa's "pebble to a pearl" album back in april of last year. we went full analog, no plug ins, etc, etc and tracked and mixed at Henson studios (formerly) A&M studios. well i'm really pleased how this one came out. nikka and husband/producer justin stanley have done a real fine job of crafting these songs.

and they were also adament about staying with old school production methods like tracking the band all live (including nikka's lead), tape editing (woohoo), you know real stuff like that. and we had 8 natural chambers and 8 emt plates for all analog verb at henson studio's. and of course all my usual pedals and tape echoes.

post up and say hello and i'll even answer a question or two...

cheers

Hey Russ!

Is this your actual working environment?
What effect does that gear have on the acoustics of the room?

What's that piece of gear to your left with all the pretty pastel colors?

Gonna check out the album... loved Nikka's stuff from a few years ago!

Awesome phaser! (although I'm partial to my castle phasers )

Russ, I picked up the album when it dropped and I think it sounds fantastic. Great record! Thanks for sharing the studio setup pic!

Are those some Q8 channels to your back right there? Look like some 310 or 312s.
Also is that a decca setup right behind you? Don't see that too often

thanks idlabs!

the mike was a u47 and sometimes an rca 44. i tracked her voice using a neve 1073 or quad 8 pre into my either my secret compressor which i call "the bomb" or a 670. sorry this is one of only a few pieces that i don't reveal. i know it might be pointless at this stage but i like to keep a little hidden...heh

hey paul,

well yes on a big production that would end up being my typical work environment. justin had some of his vintage pieces to add to the mix.

i've never been really too concerned what it might be doing to the room acoustics but i would be able to hear if something was drastically wrong in the room. it's never really been an issue. but you do need adequate air conditioning...

that is a mutron-bi phase

This thread is a great way to generate interest in the record. I am going to go get it as well. This is one cool thing about Gearslutz. You can get turned on to great music and then discuss how it was made. Fun stuff.

Finally a great engineer that have the balls to be totally honest with a secret gear!

I think that is cool....and very valid...who doesn't have a secret??

Russ are you still traveling to exotic places? any cool place lately?

Will buy the record and ask you some questions!!

Nikka Costa KILLLLS. That last record was sick. So glad it was a live feeling thing. Heard the band on KCRW playing live a couple years back and had to literally pull over and listen because it was the first real live funk I'd heard in a while (minus some live Prince stuff). That band KILLLLLS, too! Haha. Let me know if your drummer bails, I'm on a bus straight away! :-) Gotta pick up this new one. Thanks for the heads up. Lovin' the bass lines on that last record. Her vocalisms are sick, like Chaka ate Janis Joplin and burped up a baby Aretha and baby brother Sly Stone babies, little tiny baby dudes.

By the way, China Jam, the comment about corduroy being the analog of trousers absolutely made my day! Brilliant. Of course any joke about pants is a sure thing ;-)

Welcome, Russell! That must be a terribly fun gig with all that nasty groove spillin' everywhere. Not too shabby! Did you record and/or mix the last record as well? Sounded great

Hey Russ. My wife and I admire your work on Mama's Gun and Voodoo!! I also like the track "Keep Wanting More" on Nikka Costa's new album!! Great sound!

Thanks for taking the time to reach out.

One question: do you have a favorite mix bus eq that you use? or do you like to eq each individual track, and if so, which is your fav?

i don't usually put anything on the mix buss at all. sometime's for some hip hop stuff i'll use a multi-band compressor on the buss just to get a bit more level and punch. and i'll put the compressor on near the end of the mix when i'm close to printing. but otherwise 90% of the time there's nothing on the buss.

i do a lot of riding when i'm doing the final details to the mix. all eq'ing and limiting is done individually or grouped like BV's or strings. i can't get the same dynamics when i have a limiter on the mix.

you should check out the Q&A i did here awhile back (if you haven't already).

cheers

Hey Russ,

I first saw a castle phaser in, if my memory serves me right, Tony Maserati's rack while at SMS new york in 2001 or so. There are only 300 or so in existence, made in late 70's early 80's in a garage. They came as a pedal, 1u single channel, and 2u two channel (Mas has the 2u). It took me 5 years but I finally found a pedal and then a 1u within a 2 week period. Anyhow, they sound amazing. Better than any other phaser I've heard, and I've heard a few.

Back to the point of this thread, I love the album title track. The syncopated wide bubbly synth sounds really fresh. Fantastic arrangements too. Perfect balance.

P.S. if you know a good space echo tech, please let me know!

Here are a couple of pics of my Castles:

I'm listening to samples of the album on iTunes right now. Awesome work Russell, I love the sound. Even streaming over iTunes on the internet the analogue sound is there. I'm going to get this CD at Dimple Records tomorrow. GREAT STUFF, I'll probably have some questions 4U after I listen to it a few times.

analog prevails once again! we tracked onto 2 studer 800's with my dolby SR rack running 15ips. we used the new tape from ATR for 2" and 1/2" and i'm very impressed with the quality. alignments were rock solid. i just hope he'll keep making them for awhile.

Hey Russ its nice to hear that Albums are still being made this way...keep the art alive.. so did you guys track at 30IPS 24trk or 15ips? im assuming you guys used more than one tape deck to transport tracks back to back or did you guys keep it simple on the track count?

hey russ,
great sounding record.
can you tell what mics and comp. were used on drums?
specially ohs.

do you use overheads for the main drum sound in songs like
keep pushing...keep wanting.?
nice funky vibe.i like.

was the bassdrum closed or open front?

i always liked the dist. on nikkas vocals.any hint here?
i remember someone telling me that a lot mercury
equipment was used on one of the older albums.

thank you
