Great band, great performance, bad sound.

Ever heard an album by an amazing band, with stellar songs, near-perfect performances and had the sound quality ruin it all? I was listening to Californication by RHCP the other day, and I realized that the songs and performances are stellar, but somehow the record sounds like butt. Drums are thin....sounds like I'm listening to FM radio!

Not saying I'm any better than these engineers, but why does this record sound so awful to me?

Anybody realize this before? What other albums share this issue in GS-Land?

dfegadScar Tissue drum sounds.

Too much digital clipping on that record I find when you really listen. That irked the hell out of me. This also happens a lot of James' newest record 'Hey Ma.' It's played beautifully, even recorded quite well, but they made it too hot at the mastering stages and there's digital clip GALORE on certain tracks. It's a killer to hear so I dig what you're saying.

Is this trend all just part of the "Loudness Wars"? Some of the newer Foo Fighters records have the same sound. It's like you're hearing it on the radio, but it's the CD.
