EQ carving and or

eq carving and or....... recording some instruments at different frequencies ?

for dense mixes ,anyone with lots of experience in this area care to share ....

Most of the time i take a guess as to which instrument is the best choice to carve and witch part of the spectrum to address and band width, thin or wide.

i know this seems like one of those ..''.how long is a piece of string type of question''

Well for me I would say first tracking(recording) can become dangerous with EQ added. So be careful.
Always best that if it sounds good to start with, then record it that way. Afterwords (And here's the hard part) you'll have to start training and trusting your ears. And never underestimate the power of a good set of monitors. (First good lesson I learned)

Hope this helps,
John

get the sound you want going in, use EQ to shape it. the only time i've ever really used EQ in tracking is when I need i find i need to add a little 15k to a dark pre

for me its:

Sony Oxford or Waves Q for cuts

Waves SSL EQ to change the sound (rock mix)
