The Carr Mercury is great, but going in the opposite direction cost wise. Sounds awesome though.

I'd definitely recommand the Emery Microbaby (or SuperBaby if want more wattage), but it's $700 for the open chassis version. But, it's easy to swap tubes in that open chassis version, and you can get a lot of flexibiltiy out of it by swapping the tubes. So it's more like a number of amps in one in some ways.

For recording....LOVE my 78 Sliverface VibroChamp. I just ordered a Weber British Series BluePup to shake the mud out of the stock speaker. I even play small acoustic gigs with it...and it sounds BRILLIANT. Someone mentioned before that the vintage amps have more of a classic "bark" to them...it's hard to describe...but I know what they are saying. Some of the boutique amps have captured this (Victoria, BadCat, Matchless, etc)...and some of the Fender custom shop stuff comes close...but why not just buy an old Black/Silver face and be done with it?

If you want to record a nice clean Fender sound, the new Super Champ XD puts out a great, great "Blackface" style sound. They're not glamorous or expensive, but set on clean they sure sound good!

I own a '69 Princeton with RCA and Telefunken tubes and I'm very very happy with it. Use it mainly for the Fender Rhodes recordings.
