Seperate converter

i have realized that alot of people use a seperate converter with a digi 002. i no this seems like a stupid question but whats the point of the that? And whats the signal flow once you do that?

The point is that the converters in the 002 aren't that great. Conversion is the biggest bottleneck in any digital studio and with high-end conversion you can capture the source in a more "true-fashion", thus giving you better stereo imaging and depth of field, along with an accurate representation of frequencies.

The signal chain when doing this with a 002 would be to utilize the 002's ADAT i/o. This means that you are limited to recording at either 44.1 or 48kHz and can have up to 16 channels of i/o going simultaneously (8 in and 8 out as the ADAT Lightpipe ports allow 8 signals per port across a single lightpipe cable).

So, in the case of using the Lynx Aurora8 with the LT-ADAT interface card, you would connect the LT-ADAT i/o to/from the ADAT ports on the 002. You would connect external mic-pre's to the Aurora's A/D side and whatever monitor controller you are using to channels 1/2 on the Aurora's D/A side.

When the audio is sent into the computer, the signal flow goes like this:

Mic->Mic-Pre->Aurora (A/D)->Aurora ADAT Out->002 ADAT In->PTLE

Just reverse it for the opposite flow (i.e. coming out of the computer to your monitors).

Hope that helps!

The cool thing about using great external converters, is that with a great converter, the quality of what you record into an MBox, 002 or other low end system, should be on par with recording into a top of the line pro tools HD rig. Once you get into mixing and processing, some other things some into play, but the raw sounds can be as good as the best of them.
