Guitar Sound in Weezer's "Buddy Holly"?

Does anyone know what was used to obtain the rhythm guitar sound in Weezer's "Buddy Holly"?

My assumption is that it's a Les Paul through a Plexi, maybe with some pedal of some sort?

Recently, I heard a song called "The Mountain" by a band called Heartless Bastards that seems to have -roughly- the same tone and it got me curious...

Anyone know?

I'd be interested to know this as well --- I think I remember hearing that the guitars were recorded at very low volume for this album.

I know Rivers was using an early Mesa/Boogie head, Mark I or II, through an old Marshall 8x10 cab. Strat with humbuckers. I believe that record was made before Brian Bell became the rhythm guitarist, so I have no idea what was used for the 2nd guitar.

I haven't seen specifics on the recording process of the album, but as far as Weezer gear throughout the 90s is concerned you won't find a more complete list of gear than this.

I red somewhere that this 8x10 is actually a 4x12 (in a 8x10 box).

The prominent rhythm tone is Rivers>SG>Mark I>Marshall 4 in 8X10.

Ok, so I was close. I guessed Les Paul, it is likely to have been an SG. I said Plexi, the consensus seems to be a Mark I.

I just googled "Mark I" and the Wikipedia entry specifically mentions Rivers Cuomo using one with a Les Paul Special on the 1994 release! Great info, gotta love Gearslutz and the wikipedia...

Heartless Bastards from Austin? I randomly met that band last fall in a grocery store parking lot in Amherst, MA.

I believe so. Their song "The Mountain" is track #5 on this month's Paste Sampler. Good tune, I really dig the guitar. You can't really go wrong with a cranked Marshall (or whatever it is) and a pedal steel...heh

Add 6 double "A" batteries and a distortion+ and your ready to go.

There was an interview with Ric Ocasek in Guitar World a few years back. Rivers used to roll the tone on the guitar all the way off supposedly, this was how he got his signature sound. Amp wise if I remember correctly there might have been an Orange head used.

That sounds like his solo sound perhaps.

I seem to remember a photo of their backline set up in the garage where they used to rehearse in either the booklet of the "Blue Album" or "Pinkerton".
