I'll quote from a thread asking about amp modelers. These plugs are free guitar amp simulator plugins. Waves GTR Solo must be mentioned first because it was a commercial product but has been made free for a year, and it is quite fully featured considering that it is free. I think every guitarist or producer who might need to reamp something without the benefit of perfect circumstances should register a copy of this since it's free, you never know when it'll be the right tool for the job (though I am not a great fan of Waves GTR's modeling, in general).

There are also some very good free plugins, usually more basic in their features but some of which have remarkable tones for no money at all. Look into Nick Crowe's Wagner Sharp and Wagner II Sharp; BTE Audio's Juicy77 amp and TubeScreamerSecret pedal plugins; Simulanalog Suite is still good sounding though it's very old now (and the guys who made it are now making Overloud TH1!). Voxengo Boogex 1.5 is flexible and useful, plus it lets you load external IRs for an even greater variety of tones.

THE INTERRUPTOR: VST devices download page

These delay plugins are the best in softwareland in my book

Also try the SSL LMC on parralel compression tasks, it's my secret weapon

I just wanted to say thanks for pointing these out to me! These plugins are a great example of amazingly high quality free VSTs. One begins to wonder what benefits necessarily belong only to commercial products... Support, perhaps

I've used Bionic Delay for a long time but never bothered to check out the maker's site, stupid on my part, I was really missing out!

90% of the plugins I use are free. Some are better than others, but the same can be said about plugins you pay for.

The Kjarrhus classic series. A Swiss army collection of utilitarian and great sounding plugins. I use these quite frequently.
Kjaerhus Audio - Professional Audio Plug-ins

My favorite delay plugin ever is free:
dB-T Tempo Delay - FREE DirectX plug-in from db audioware

My faves

Superwave PP8 is great if you want those Roland jp8000 kinda sounds.

RetroDelay is a friggin' gem - it sounds great and is really unpredictable, like a real tape delay - I always end up getting something more interesting out of it than what I put in. And its got a rather nice Spring Reverb on it too.

Another votes for the fish fillets - Blockfish is great when you need something Quick N Dirty.

Although I don't use plug-ins, I have just randomly stumbled across these: shuttleplugs - free VST plugins

Which have, at the very least, some nicely designed GUIs!

I love Glitch by dBlue. It's great for crazy Fx and f***ing up audio in a cool way.
It's a pity that it is Window only, really the only thing that I miss since I'm on mac....
Best regards

Aixcoustic Solutions - Electric-Q. the 'posihfopit edition' is the definitive freeware equaliser...

U-he - Triple Cheese. the funkiest comb-filter synth you'll ever hear. amazing tones to be got from this, and it's done by the part man, part machine coder U-he!

FXPansion - Orca. stunning interface. great company. developmental synth. chunky tones. what's not to love?

Green Oak - Crystal. as someone said, just an amazing synth. i believe the developer was snaffled up by Spectrasonics...

Magnus - NyquistEQ. i love this EQ, so help me i do.

Flux - Bittersweet. transient fun! check it out

Flux - Stereo Tool. remarkable for freeware...

Leftover Lasagne - Pushteq. great little Pultec-ish unit.

Audio Damage - Rough Rider. check it!

Almost every VST plugin I use is freeware with the exception of Prophet53 and b4 II.

That being said, my free favorites are:

#1: The Antress Collection - a whole slew of compressors/limiters/eq's etc. somewhat based on vintage favorites (with familiar vintage looking interfaces)
1176/LA4/API eqs/pultec eqs/etc,etc,etc... I won't make ANY claims of them sounding as good as the real hardware they mimic, but they get the job done for me

#2: The Kjaerhus Classic Collection - whole toolbox: compressor/limiter/delay/modulation... good stuff

#3: SIR - a freeware impulse response reverb

#4: Voxengo Span - great analysis tool...

#5: Voxengo MSED - simple inline Mid/Side encoder/decoder - awesome for adding a touch of stereo widening to a track if used lightly

#6: MrRay - wow.. pretty damn good Rhodes/Wurli sounds...

#7: TAL Number 62 - Roland Juno 60 model... pretty good... I owned a real one, and this is pretty damn close...

also, for vst effects or instruments, check out kvraudio.com which maintains a huge database of VST plugins... nice feature in the search is limiting it to just free plugs....
