Call me a sour puss, but I can't stand all those old standards. They make me want to puke, honestly.

If I ever get married, hopefully I'm rich enough to have Air come perform live for my wedding. Their music makes me want to fall in love again.

Check out the song "Playground Love" from the Virgin Suicides soundtrack, it makes my heart heavy every time I hear it. Just beautiful.

Ouch, "Every Breath You Take" is a song about stalking and madness! heh

James, first of all...congrats brotha!

"(Just Like) Starting Over" by John Lennon would top my list but that might be a strange pick. It's upbeat and has to do with keeping a relationship fresh, plus this is your second marriage so might make sense.

I just love that tune though...! I have never, ever in my life listened to that song without all the hair on my body standing up and without an emotional feeling...

first dance, we did a salsa number Saca Tu Mujer by tito puente which
is probably too obscure for many

but for an english song for the wedding party processional
into the main dining room (just after the cocktail hr)
we did Little Richard Long Tall Sally
its a fun upbeat number

"Maybe I'm Amazed" -- Wings

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I've mostly played in Blues Bands, and I was always amazed at how many people hired us to play for their weddings. "Breakin' Up Somebody's Home", anyone? How about "Backdoor Man"?

Funny stuff. I was at a wedding where the big bride/groom solo dance was that "Lips of an Angel" song by Hinder (yuck). I was listening to the lyrics and it sounded like he was talking about ditching his current girl for his old one.

interesting read. is this for the first dance?

over here (good ol' europe) everything from the start of the wedding till the first numbers after the dinner are strictly classical, including the first dance, usually a waltz so the neweds can proudly show how their dance lessons paid off

...or maybe im too posh and have been only to this kind of weddings?

anyway, after that, hell breaks loose and all kind of music comes out, usually within the tastes of the attendants (in the best dj's physical interest ). I've never been to a wedding with a band playing though, it's all DJ. The only musicians, if any, are in the church, tipically a chorus and a solo soprano for Schubert's "ave Maria" and such stuff.

btw, in these last years allmost all wedding appear to fold it with Gloria Gaynor's "I will survive"... very late (or soon ) the next morning, at around 8:00 AM or so

I was joking with a buddy about his band playing at my wedding this fall and he said they could play this song. I'd be in trouble, but man it would be fun!

I'm thinking of "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys, but the first line says "I may not always love you" which could breed contempt prior to investigation among people at a wedding!

When I was doing the wedding band thing as a teenager in the early 80's, it seems like every couple wanted "Color My World" by Chicago.

Why not write and record your own song? I think that would KILL any other choice. You've certainly got the chops to do it!

Because its the Brides day and she usually ends up deciding everything.

Showing up on time? When have you ever known a musician to show up on time for anything?

Just kidding James....

God Only Knows is actually not bad, once you get past the possible confusion over some of the lines. Great tune and lyrics, people can sing along if they want. Hard to dance to, though. A bit too bouncy.

The cheesy, overused, overly emotional songs are painful to listen to. On the other hand, songs that have nothing to do with long term, monogamous relationships are obviously inappropriate in this context (Baby Got Back, etc.). And, even if an obscure song has personal meaning for the wedding couple, nobody knows the song, so the importance is lost on them.

I like familiar, but not overdone, simple love songs. It is hard to go wrong with those. That's why I suggested You Send Me. There's a whole world of good music like this from the 50's and 60's. People know the songs, but are not sick of them.

I think my fantasy "opposite of appropriate" song at a wedding reception would be "Worst That Could Happen" by the Brooklyn Bridge. It's sung to the bride by the commitment-phobic ex-boyfriend she DIDN'T marry: "If he really loves you more than me, maybe its the best thing for you, but its the worst that could happen to me." Ouch. It even has the traditional recessional music played by the horn section during the emotional finale! I would pay good money to hear that at a wedding reception.

Free Bird.

Come on, you were all thinking it. I just got it out in the open.

Plus, I think a lot of wedding bands know the first few measures of Free Bird, just so they can start playing it for a laugh when some smart-ass screams it out.

I've had "You Send Me" in my head all day. If it was me, that would be the winner.

And Congrats on wedding!

Congrats, James, very exciting.

I'm PRobb on "You Send Me"

I actually think that standards tend to be more on-point lyrically and vibe-wise for a first dance song.

Another good one is "All of Me."
