the smaller footprint sizes (16-24 ch) can be had in the $2-5k range and while they certainly don't touch the A-Range or B-Range consoles, they do sound great and definitely have a vibe. Plus, they're pretty easy to upgrade and depending on the upgrade can REALLY sound sweet.
+1 and Amek Angela I serie's... My god one in good shape is a relieve for me to work on. Its not the best of the best but for that price is a great console!

ok this is not really from using experience but just from data Ive gathered on possible sleeper consoles for under 5 G...

Sound Workshop
DDA
Wheatstone
Auditronics
Ramsa ( I have to put this in or Steely Fan will get mad lol)
Soundcraft Delta ( specially with Jim Williams mods)
Audio Pacifica ( another broadcast console )
Cad Maxcon
Peavey AMR
MCI
Studer
Calrec ( probably more than 5 G)
Midas Venice ( not exactly a sleeper)
Mackie Onyx ( supposedly competitive )

I like my Peavey AMR 1600. It is a large console so you need space for it. I paid about 2.5k several years ago and could not be happier. The great thing is it has been reliable and everything works!

+1 Venice...not an official sleeper, but less known in the studio world versus the Remote folks

Not exactly a "recording" console, but the new APB Dynasonics 16 channel is fantastic as a mixing instrument! I love mine!!!!

Yup, just got a nice 16 channel 4k e series with a new switch mode PSU for less than 20k incl 16 channels of spare PPM meters, patchbay etc...

Euphonix cs2k and 3k may qualify for sleeper status, as long as SSL 4k is on the list.

It will make everyone need a machine room

Funny you mention it. What do you want to know?? I was going to throw the D&R Vision (the original Vision before API swiped the name heh heh) into the fray.

Yes, I've used them at several studios and have a couple of my own. One rack and one small frame.

EXTREMELY sleeper because no one could figure out how to configure them. Just too ahead of the marketplace for most folks who just wanted to order a "32X8, 16X4" or "whatever" console back in the analog console heyday. Many, many different types and styles of input and output modules for easy configuration. You can make it what you want. Split, In-line, Live, Broadcast. You name it. Every one is different.

Not so cheap in the US anymore though. The Euro to US$ exchange rate has killed the bargain that was had for many years.

Sound as good as the more expensive D&R mixers. Same basic technology, parts, construction, etc.. My small frame hot-rodded Vision is AMAZING. Not as functional, but cooler than my OrionX in a lot of ways. It sounds phenomenal.

A) one that can be put to sleep, without powering it down...

like a computer..

B) a desk that has a pull out shelf underneath for taking naps.

DDA DMR12 - what a beast but super flexible board. Patch bay integration is great.

I'm learning more about it and it's really helped the scope of my work using this board.
The EQ is of a specific flavour - a bit 90's.
But useful enough for sculpting, tone shaping or pulling out problem freq's.

Upsides
- 8 aux sends; with great aux send control with EQ, solo and mute on each of the sends;
- good master section control ; I'm using the mono checking a lot for checking phase issues;
- flexible routing;
- is actually quite efficient on the juice, not a noticeable drain on the power bills
- quiet board
- two line inputs per channel with ability to pull in both line inputs and control the second via aux7/8 alternate functionality ; I use this to route in synths alongside recorded sources.

Downsides
- No transformer sound (consequently doesn't weigh much)
- EQ could be considered boring
- no built in compression or reverb

Both sides
- Large format console with oodles of channels and some dedicated space is required.
- edac connectors take a bit to get used to, but cables are cheap and freely available on e-bay. Actually this turned out to be quite a positive..

I'm loving it for now.

Analog Ramsa. They're dirt cheap right now but they sound incredible. A true sleeper.
Yes. Even the small Ramsas sound nice. Great, flexible little boards for a few hundred bucks. They were huge in the video industry, but audio guys never really caught on.

for years, I've mixed live sound with a local production company that owned a DDA CS8 console.. the ****tiest bands tended to send pretty darn good through this particular mixer.. and one day, the opportunity came to buy it second hand.. it's a 48 channel DDA CS8.. bought it for $3000.. freekin' awesome sounding console.. the pres are not Neve, but they are waaaay far from sucking.. EQ is very musical.. unfortunately no Q control on the EQ's.. but hey, it's an awesome sounding EQ otherwise.. the summing is rock solid with wide clarity.. for summing, the DDA has a sound, it's a sleeper console for sure

+1

Had the chance to play with one this past summer at the InfoComm convention. They had SteelyDan multis stemmed out on the board. Let me tell you, I did a ruff mix in like 30 minutes that was shockingly "deep". The EQ is very powerful. The smallest moves make drastic audible changes. Never heard a plugin do to a kick drum what the low bands on this thing did. Just a crazy sweet desk, IMO
