I did hear that. Daniel Lanois said he uses them for vocals now and again. How would people compare it to a Shure SM7 on vocals?

We have a pair of MD409s here and they have seen some vocal duties on occasion. They work well with some voices - good present detail (without any harshness) in the highs and with nicely forward/rounded/bloomed mids. A reasonable alternative to an SM7 - good for smoothness and body with a gentle/naturalistic sound IMO.

It's a nice microphone with a large diaphragm that seems to like low-mids.

When I have used it has a nice velvety sound that is cool for some vocals, a bit like a ribbon. Then again, that's with minimal equalisation, I bet you can give it many other sounds with suitable eq and compression.

You can listen to Lanois using this mic for vocals and guitar here for a session at KCRW (great session, by the way. Much better to listen to it in this way than in the low sound quality youtube videos).

Daniel Lanois - Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW

I think he also used it extensively in his album Shine for vocals.

Thanks guys. I have been enjoying dynamic mics for vocals lately. Just looking to add to the collection. Any other good dynamic mics for lead vocals you want to recommend? I have an SM7, RE20, and 58's.

MD441
BCM705
MD409 U3
SM7b

That about covers it for moving coil dynamics (ie not including ribbons, which are also dynamic). thumbsup

Thanks for that video link Santiago. Daniel makes that 409 sound as good as any LDC I've ever heard...

Add to that the PR30 and MD431.

I have a Stedman dynamic that I like a lot too - but it's pretty rare.

hey Tiny what model Stedman is that? My partner has a few of them kicking around but they look so cheap I haven't tried them out.

Yes, though notably the earlier model, prior to the U3.

The U3s sound even better IMO.

This is pretty cool. We do a lot of punk stuff and the SM7 works out fine but I never thought about trying the MD409. I love it on guitar cabs but I'm definitely going to check it out on vox as well as snare.

Yes, I own such 409's it's been build between 1969 and 1971.

It's the most beautiful edition by Sennheiser.

U3 vs N

Does anyone have experience with the MD 409 U3 vs the MD 409 N versions?
The N version is listed as super-cardioid.

U3=XLR
N=klein Tugel
Capsule is the same
Housing is just a little bit different. The U3 has the capsule stuck into foam.
The N version (and the OEM Echolette ES14 as well) have a 3 point suspension. We feel like they sound better of axis than the U3.
