I don't always get great musicians walking in. I've had and still get my share of people who can't play.

Great thread!

My preferences... If I have a choice.

1. Rehearse. Always get the band to rehearse as much as possible before recording. And if possible attend one or two of the rehearsals. I know this is easier said than done. When I was running my own studio and my daily bread was coming from the daily grind, I was just trying to get people in the door and keep the bills paid. Now that I make my money through a few different channels, with the projects that I do choose to produce, I can focus more on production and insist that the band are well prepared beforehand.

2. Analog In. I try getting everything on tape. I don't mind drop-ins and if the band are playing to click, even better. Some of the older machines do scare me though. But... I love the sound.

3. Digital Out. I then like to fly eveything, in all it's heavenly analog glory, into PT via AD8000's and mix there. I like the editing and now that I don't have my own studio and most of the enginners that I mix with have PT, I find this is the easiest way to move stuff around. I'm sure the ol' analog/digital buss agrument will rear it's ugly head here but to be honest, the mixes that I'm hearing coming out of PT now are pretty much equalling, and in some cases even beating, what I was hearing coming out of analog desks. Not necessarily sonically, but taken as a whole. THAT'S JUST MY OPINION!

And now... (Future) no. 4. After reading Jules' initial posts about the D2B I would really like to try bringing everything back out into the sunlight and experience the extra punch and weight that would bring.

O' Lord, when I closed my studio I thought I'd finally put my *****-ish nature aside but after finding this sight I realise I'm... just... a... GEARSLUT... at... heart...

I'm FREE
