Telefunken is back!

So I found a post over on RAP about Telefunken making mics again. After thinking it's Soundelux I did a little digging and came up with this.

http://www.telefunkenusa.com/

They are going to be building Elam 251 reissues and they should be ready to ship around the AES show at a whopping $7500 each. As of right now the only dealer I know of is Vintagetones at www.vintagetones.com

I've been thinking about this for a few days. Does anyone get the feeling that it might be too much $$$ too late in the game? You can get three Lawson 251's or a pair of Soundelux 251's for the same dough. Both Lawson and Soundelux are established boutique mic builders like Nuemann, Blue, Scheops and others I'm forgetting. What company or who bought the rights to the Telefunken name? What do they know about how the mics are made? Why is it $7500 tacos? That would probably make it the most expensive mic I know of in current production. Is that just because an original 251 is going for between $12 to 20K at the moment?

I had an ugly thought that AKG might be involved . . .

I don't think there's enough market for three clones, though some silk-for toilet paper big market studios will probably have all 3 and an original so you can agonize over the differences.

well it seems as though the guys over at "VintageTones" have purchased the name "Telefunken" from a certain someone who purchased it from Telefunken when they closed in the eighties.

the 'new' Telefunken will only make 251's for now.
they will be making duplicates of the originals, NOT copies.

along with the name they also purchased all of Telefunken's historical paperwork.
I hope they can keep the integrity of the name intact...

AKG is not involved at all.

With the greatest respect, what's the difference betwen a 'duplicate' and a 'copy'?

while I am certainly NOT a spokesman for TelefunkenUSA,
I can tell you that they are using some of the original transformers and not copies of the original transformers...yadda, yadda
If I were you I would contact them like I did and ask as many questions as you like, they are pretty cool over there.
cheers-Mike

Still, doesn't anyone think that $7500 for one mic might be a little much? It better be damn good for that price. I also want it to make coffee and clean up after a session. That includes wrapping cables.

Oh, I don't expect to be in the market for one anytime soon. And I don't have a roblem with 'copies' - I've got several of the reissue Universal Audio products here. Which reminds me - I wonder how your distinction between 'duplicate originals' and 'copies' would fit regarding the early 1990's LA-2A's that Urei made?

But if they are using only original components, that means that it will have to be a very small production run...

I'm not surprised - you can still get Marinair transfromers from Sowter, and UA is apparently using UTC transformers in their LA-2A. But are they 'original' or copies? And (getting back to the Telefinken) there's still the issue of capsules to deal with.

I'm not trying to be pedantic here (OK, maybe a little bit), but either the guys who bought the Telefunken name are using only NOS parts (which,. I assume, is what you mean by 'duplicates'), or they're using newly manufactured parts (even if manufactured by the same OEM), which would make them either 'clones' or 'copies'. But since you said that AKG isn't involved, then the capsules can't be newly manufactured by the original supplier.

In any case, I look forward to hearing them up against the old models.

ya know...I don't really care too much for this type of thing either.
I'm really just interested because of thier most brave attempt at 'reviving' the name Telefunken...seems a load that no one in thier right mind would want to take on. oh well, we'll see.

What can I say? Some people like playing Russian roulette.

It should be interesting to see what happens with the mic. I'm sure a few of the bleeding edge studios will buy one right from the start. I'd like to know if there are plans to recreate other mics. I'm sure they're going to stay away from the modules since all Vintage Tones does is mics.

I'd like to see someone reissue or do recreations of Helios, Lang and RCA gear. Especially the BA-6A.

$7500!!

rollz

yeah thats a dodgey price point isnt it coz

u can get a real (not copy duplicate)

m49 or such 4 that

whereas the other booteak mics mentioned come in below that possiblity..

and i personally would rather have an m49 with the sexy red
thing on any day

also if i had enuff cash to have both i would probly have enuff to save up the rest and get an original 251

also americans (with the greatest respect coz i LOVE american gear) dont make things that sound german yell ....they always add extra cream!

It seems like I heard about them a couple of years ago - Cyril Jones, the guy who makes Raindirk consoles, was making them.

Could be two different guys - but with the Trident modules, at least both parties had at least a claim (of greater or lessor merit) to be making them.

And then there's the company - I can't remember their name - who ways that they're making an updated version of the 80B.

Ah - is there a web page for the new Helios modules? I tried poking around the proaudioeurope site a little, but didn't see it.

I remember the BA-6A coming up on r.a.p. and the issue of why not reissue it if it's so good, and the answere naturally was that it would be prohibitively expensive. Have you looked at Sowter's replacement signal input transformer for a Fairchild 670? $12,473.89!!!!!! Nothing else they sell is priced in a way that could reasonably be construed as gouging, so in some cases I guess they just don't make them like they used to and probably never will.

You would need to drop a 'Sprint nickle' to talk with Mark Thompson - Fletchers UK counterpart...

I am jonesing for gear and am close to calling him on various PITA issues, I will try to ask on the Helios.. If I can't put off the call any longer..

It sounds like it - maybe Cyril Jones is no longer making them. At approximately $2830, they're a little on the pricey side, aren't they?

As I said above grudge I believe there may be TWO different folks making Helios re-makes.. If that IS the case only folks like Fletcher & Mark Thompson will be able to give you the lowdown on who's who...

But well done for trackingdown the link.. hmmm..... dreary old website eh?!

The helios thing is way cool

From what i have worked out there are two differetn crews making this sort of gear.

Tony Arnold --> Mike's mate!
and
Helios Audio -->

AS to which one is the best or most reputable .. who knows but i know that Tony Arnold who is/was the resident guru of anything AMPEX in the UK an major Helios SLUT! . tony has the original name and i think the drawings etc for the Helios gear and bought hem and parts from the original owner/ designer Dick Sweetenham. Tony's modules have a great review on George Shilling's review page. www.george.shilling.com . Tony has rebuilt and customised several vintage Helios consoles in lcuding the one @ Heliosscentricstudios.com

Ask the guys at Vintage King becuae they seem to know which is whcih and what are the more desirable modules etc... but i dont think u can go wrong with any of them could you Jules or Mike?

so go and give them a sniff.. i think Tony Arnold has moved to France? so give him a go. He is building himslef a custom 48 channel Helios...... i ahve to go cos the drool is hitting the keyboard faster than i can type...lol

PEACE

Well, Mike at Vintage King is a _major_ Helios slut. I know he has a board installed in his studio and half of another one kicking around. Mostly routing modules and stuff that he bought from one of my old employers. He'd be a great person to talk to about that stuff.
