Who's The Master?

Hey,
Quick question....'cause I know someone can answer this in between taking drags on a cigarette: I have a young friend who is wiring up a Yamaha AW2816 an MPC2000 and a Korg Triton. Who should be the matser?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Benjy,

Non smoker here.heh

Do you mean midi/Smpte sync master?

If its the sequencer than either the MPC2000 or the Triton(depends on what is the main sequencer). Usually its the MPC(it has a tighter feel than the Triton).

If its digital sync, the Triton only works at 48khz.

I would gather the Yamaha should be your main digital sync.

Thanks for the quick response.
My friend has the AW2816. His friend just brought over the MPC2000 & the Triton. They are only doing midi as of now. So...who's the midi master?

All can do midi sync and MTC.

If the sequences are already done(probably on the MPC) and they are looking to track vocals/instruments than your best bet is to make the Yamaha the master. Make the MPC2000 and the Triton chase midi sync or MTC. Make sure if they do so that the MPC is in song mode and the first measure be a bar of blank. Because of its protocol, the MPC has a hard time chasing the first beat when sync'd(midi sync,MTC or smpte).

If they are looking to make tracks than this is a different story. I would probably do the sequences on the MPC first and then sync them up like I said previously.

Good Luck.

Most likely the yamaha, if there is a tempo map, or a provision for creating one to what has already been recorded.

I'm assuming you intend to sync them via MTC. Do all of those units sync and generate MTC, or do some of them only sync to MTC? I have a feeling that not all of them generate MTC, and in that case the one that does generate MTC (prolly the AW2816) would be the master by default.
