Audio Technica 4060

I just ordered my Great River Mp2Nv and now I'm looking to uprgrade my microphone collection. I've been considering the AT4060 and was wondering if it might be a good match for the GR. I'll be trying it out as soon as my local music store has them in stock again but I would like to hear from others. Thanks.

I've used one for vocals and guitar amps a few times. I remember it sounding really good. But it doesn't quite have the name and clout of some of the bigger name mics like Nuemann, Lawson, Soundelux etc. so I don't think it gets a fair chance against them.

Check out an article on: http://www.prosoundweb.com/news/rec/0103/brn.php

It's about David Levy of Legacy Lags speaking about the Brauner Phantom C matching up well with the Great River preamp.

I use the 4060 alot since I copped it a couple of months ago. It almost always winns shoot outs against my U87 in picking a vocal mic or an accoustic guitar mic. I'm using it alot with a Buzz MA2.2 which is a pre which is compareable to the original GR, it is in the "clean" category which the NV is not. I've used it on screaming twins and marshalls and a 62 Bassman, and it sounds great. I'm very impressed with this mic. Take care Logan

I love mine!

I got one awhile back and I absolutely love it for what I do. To me it's not a mic that drips with personality neither is it sterile as a clean-room. It just sounds good and doesn't get in the way. Used prices are VERY resonable. Usually around $650 (US$)

A solid purchase in my opinion

I had a 4060 and I wasn't very happy. It just sounded too "clinical" to me...almost kinda harsh. I was going through a Joe meek SC2......now I have a Studio Projects C3 and love it.

The AT 4051 small diaphragm condenser is sweet though!

Me too

I like mine alot. I don't pick it for vocals most of the time, but that's 'cos I have mics I usually like better. By itself, it's not a "cutting through the mix" bright kind of mic, so no vocals for songs that need that. However, I use it on just about everything else. I don't think you can go wrong, and like Jay said, I wouldn't pay much attention to how it compares with "name" mics. It's a very good mic in its own right. Does its own thing.

I'm another fan of the 4060. Works for most things and is of a different flavor and compliment to a 4050 and/or TLM103. Doesn't have the overly extended high end like a lot of other`tube mics.

I loved the 4060 that I auditioned on my voice. It captured a lot of dynamics and sounded very natural, but profound. I didn't buy it because it sounded terrible on every other source I tried except voice (acoustic guitar, electric through an amp, bass through an amp, acoustic bass). I ended up buying a Soundelux U195 because it shone on all the other sources and sounded damned good on vocals. I'll pounce on a used 4060 one day....
