Telefunken is back!

So I found a post over on RAP about Telefunken making mics again. After thinking it's Soundelux I did a little digging and came up with this.

http://www.telefunkenusa.com/

They are going to be building Elam 251 reissues and they should be ready to ship around the AES show at a whopping $7500 each. As of right now the only dealer I know of is Vintagetones at www.vintagetones.com

Thanks for the news, Jay. I'd be curious to try that mic out against a few vintage ones when it becomes available.

Telefunken never made anything. They were an export/import agent who sold a wide variety of German-manufactured electronics under that trademark for the first 15 or 20 years after World War II.

When their contract with Neumann to export U-47s to the United States expired, they made a deal with AKG for a modified C-12 which was sold as the Telefunken 251. It'll be interesting to see who has acquired the trademark. It certainly could be AKG but it could also be just another importer of Chinese microphones because Telefunken was never more than a name and a bunch of salespeple.

Bob, there's a whole lot of info on this in my forum. It's not another Chinese mic.

certainly you mean Gefell, which is a village in Germany, home of Microtech Gefell. The word Telefunken simply consists of tele (greek for "from a distance") and funken (german for "electrical sparks").

I speak fluent gobble-de-gook so I'll translate:

1 - poster agrees that Telefunken were an export/import agent
2 - he doesn't like Telefunken
3 - he suggest you try a Helios Type 69 instead

for this information he requires payment of 1 cent per answer (total 3 cents) - simple. heh heh heh

just my 2p

That's what I thought. I was confused when he recommended a preamp as a substitute for a microphone.

I agree about the Helios Type 69 though.

And I hear Bush is thinking of invading Iraq!

Why Chinese? Shure makes mics like the SM7B, the KSM series, etc. Audio Technica, a Japanese company, has made very decent and very affordable mics for decades. The AT 4033, 4047 and 4050 are all mics that you find in real pro studios--places that wouldn't be caught dead with MXL or Studio Projects mics.

They sound good!

EDIT: OK, I see you are in Taiwan, which would make sense that you have easy access to the Chinese mics. The ones I have heard that I think sound decent and are built well are ADK and SE. Especially SE, which unlike most of them is actually a Chinese owned company, and has unique designs and high quality control.

Rode mics are consistantly good too.

That is really funny... VERY old school. Yes let's start a signature drive to get the power cable thread unlocked. That one was an all time classic.

sE is actually an American owned company but they own their own factory in China which does make them unique amongst all of the rebranders out there. I believe your confusion lies with Siwei Zou's heritage which is Chinese born and raised, then moved here and became a citizen of the US. He's a very accomplished musician also!

I agree sE gets high marks for doing their own thing and not copying others. The shame is they are compared to OEM rebranders and people think their price is too high without realizing what sE puts into their mic operation.

Rode mics have been made exclusively in Australia for years now, they had a stint of doing things in China but it's 100% out now.
