Anyone hear a Dan Alexander 1073 copy

Hi Jules and comapny. Hope the recording business is treating you well.

http://www.danalexanderaudio.com/daaudioconst.html

Haven't been able to find any user reviews about this one. It's a dual pre w/o the EQ for about $1100. Claims (of course) to be nearly identical to a 1073 in sound. There are no specs on the website. Does anyone have any experience with this piece?

Thanks,
Curt

Hi Curt,

Sorry, I haven't used the pre you describe.

Neve 10XXs and the SSL J series pres pretty much get me where I need to go.

For a home/project setup I'd probably go with the Brent Averill 1272 pres, preferably with vintage rather than new St Ives trannies, but that's just me.

Thanks for your reply Jon. You're always very helpful.

It's worth mentioning that these 1073 copies are about $1150 new on e-bay for two channels. Cheaper than the Averill 1272's.

I used to own one of these. Long story short (I'll find it and copy if you want to see it) my dealer gave me a full refund after I owned it for over a year. My issues? It blew up twice, sloppy wiring, non-original parts and transformers (I was told they were) but the worst was this. The only path to ground is the audio. The power supply is not grounded. Oh, and my first one had a dead channel when I pulled it out of the box. With all of that said they sounded decent but I like my Vintech just as much and that was $1350.

My tech recently told me to stay away for Dan Alexander gear. He said the way that guy wires gear should be illegal.

When I heard people compare the 1073 and the ripoffs, I don't really heard them break it down into Mic Pre vs. Eq... I (I know, blasphemy here) don't really like the 1073 eq all that much, but I really like the pre on vocals. One of these days (hopefully around AES or the Grammys or something) I'll do a 'blind shoot out', but till then, how to the MIC PRE's stack up? (And I hardly care how they are wired if they sound good)

Thank you gents... that is exactly the kind of info I was looking for, since this would be the kind of thing you'd have to buy blind, or... would that be deaf?

e-cue, the Dan Alexander copy doesn't have EQ, so any comparisons are strictly pre-amp. You probably know that but just in case.

Dan Alexander mic pre's

I have 4 channels and I and everyone who has borrowed them loves the way they sound. I have had no maintenance issues after five years. The external power supplies are built like tanks.

.....my 2 cents

They just don't make threads like the used to, huh? heh These new threads are good, but not as good as the old threads.. The old threads had a more rounded low end, and were less bright....

Don't buy into that vintage hype about the "warmer, fuller, more 3D" threads of yesteryear. I personally believe we are in the midst of a new golden age of forum technology with some of today's thread starters--marrying the tried and true typing techniques of the past with cutting edge smilies and acronyms--posting topics that in some cases surpass the classics. Use your EYES, people! Don't just assume that the prose in those vintage threads have less typos, awkward turns of phrase, and bad jokes because some self-styled forum guru says so. Compare them to modern threads side-by-side on your own monitors (lcd) and decide for yourself. heh

the newer threads ( although they lack that distortion commonly recognized as warmth ) do have much more detail.
this is often translates as unnecessary and harsh.
i personally prefer the warmer all be it distorted threads.

I knew it, you're cloning a vintage thread.

It was only a matter of time.

I think the old threads just need to be recapped.
