stock up on dynamics / d-12e?

was just having this conversation with a friend, and figured I shoot it here...

I as always rely upon my few really good condensors for most types of sounds, yet really value certain dynamics and the things they can do for me. As of late I was turned onto the sm-7 (there is the older "a", and newer "b" version, not sure what the difference is yet I happened to grab an as new "a" off ebay).

Besides the stock of 57's, 421's and re-20 - anyone really rely upon anything else out there such as Beyer or EV dynamics?

I have been trying to stock up on different dynamics to have a versataille kick micing setup and am always looking for things most rooms aint got.

Just scored an as new old AKG D-12e off ebay, pumped for that to come - anyone use one of those and dig it to death - I've never gone nuts over the new d-112, yet am digging the shure beta 52 kick mic.

so, what do you guys line up to try to get that sound (before you end up replacing it in PT), you can't tell me the kick from that "papa roach" single all over the radio right now doesnt have a sampled kick...

I am digging a S/H Beyer 201 - on acc (will try snare shell soon)

I am really behind on any sort of sample 'collection'...

Just did this earlier this week..

421 with the diaphragm 3" or 4" inside the hole of the front head with a tunneled TLM193 18"outside the kick. Flip phase til it thumps just right. Check phase of combined kick signal with overheads. I'm really diggin this sound...

This is nothing groundbreaking, but there is a good reason why it's a commonly used method.

D-12e is one of my favorite dynamics.
Really nice for EGT tone as well as kick.
The SM-7 can be a contender in many vocal applications.
Do not underestmate the applications for these mics.

EV RE 15's and 16's are a must...and cheap...
The RE16 reminds me of a dynamic U87...same bumps...
The RE38 is one of the great sleepers...great on kick and amps, especially the AC30...
Ditto on the Beyer M201...snare mic of choice these days...

The D12E (with a 57) is the shizzle on a bass cabinet, and a MUST on stand up bass. My absolute favorite. The SM-7's were rumored to be the mic used on "Triller" (although I don't know the difference between the A and B). The D112 (or my 47fet and even the D12E) on the outside of the kick with a package blanket extended far in front of the kick, kinda like a tunnel is SWHEET with a 57 close to catch the beater. (Delay these so the phase is as tight as possible and double check it with the OH's). I used this combo on the BEP / Travis (drummer from Blink 182) calab which should be out in a month or so.

Yup, D12e with a 57 is a great combo. One 'trick' with distorted guitars... close mic the egt cab with both D12 and 57, but have the d12 mic stand make contact with the cabinet... huge and clean bottom end, mix in 57 for mids and hi's! (the 57 is very close miced on the center dome of the speaker).

Every now and then I like to record a band using dynamics only . It gives a particular character to the overall sound.
I also try to impose restrictions upon myself to excercize and challange the clever portion of the recording equation.
Some of my own personal engineering 'discoveries' have been about some limiting factor, and an inspired workaround. Working on completely unfamiliar equipment can also garner new and interesting sounds.

I don't know about the Thriller album, but I recorded MJ for a Kenny Loggins album and used an SM-7... Sounded really good on him... maybe he told Bruce... Ya think?

I used a D12e on a tuba overdub today and felt like how god must feel when he's recording tuba with a D12e. This mic just seems to handle low end like no other. (Tubaist quote "Fat like Jenny Craig with her azzhole sewn shut") Tuba on a hiphop record, who'da thunk it.

Yeah...I believe that Anthony Keidis uses the SM7 almost exclusively....or at least Rick Rubin does. I know it's the vocal mic all over the new album as well as Blood Sugar Sex Magik. There is a video called Funky Monks that shows a lot of recording of BSSM and Anthony is really manhandling the thing!! (thing=sm7....in THIS case anyway:eek: )

One of you guys should give me one for free!! (worth a shot )

I love my D12 and D25 for a bunch of things and dig the weak "backside" for ambient effects too...

In reference to Anthony's vocals: He only learned how to sing post auto tune. Mic selection doesn't matter all that much in regard to piss poor pitch. One word for tracking his vocals: PAINFUL.

Julian, the 201 is always my first choice on snare, you should try it on kick too, very tight sound.

Talking about Beyer; the M88 is a really great mic too and so are the M160/260 ribbons.

The 88 is a very versatile mic, a real classic.

Cool and cosy board BTW.

Peace, Han.

I have that video. That vocal also sounds like it has massive compression and a steep high pass filter on it. Maybe even a peak up top somewhere. Very cool, not what I'd go for all the time but it works well. What a great album.

I've rambled on about my love for the SM7 before, but it just came through for me the other day on a floor tom that simply would not take to any other mike. I love that mike.
I'm gonna see what it does for a kick drum next week.

Dynamics

Love the M88, RE20 & 27, & SM7, but vmy fave's still an EV 664, when you can find one that hasn't been used as a hammer.

Really...could you elaborate?

I did an extensive mic shootout once on an oud, and the 664 was the hands down winner over some pretty heady competition...

What do you like it on?

i really like my senn 604's on toms. looked like a POS mic but sound big as hell on toms, take a brutal beating, and cheap as ****.

i like dynamic mics, even the ****tiest of mics i can find uses for.

SM7 has a top end BOOST on it, good to click on for toms... and perhaps Chilli Peppers!

664

Used to use them live on Marshalls all the time.
Their relatively open polar pattern makes them an interesting horn mic for recording, esp larger reeds like Bari Sax & Bass Clarinette.
I've also had good luck using them as overheads, though the Beyer M88, & 201 are both cool as well.

Another sleeper dynamic that sounds very good is the Revox badged mics that look like they were made by Beyer, but Beyer says they had nothing to do with the mic...(I asked them)...

The model # is M 3500, and they remind me of a Beyer M201...

Can be had very inexpensively on ebay....and are pretty common...
