Neuman TLM 103 problems...

Hey everyone,

I just did a session @ my place using my new TLM 103's I'd bought to use as overheads. I'd used them twice before in other locations (up at my school's studio) and never had any problems. However when tracking with them in my room, (into the focusrite pre's on the C24) They kept overdriving the mic pre. I turned the gain all the way down and was still getting a crackling out of them. I'm sure the mic's are working fine. Are they just not suited for this application?

Any help would be much appreciated as well as other reccomendations for a Pro Quality drum overhead.

Thanks everyone,
Jon

I have a pair of tlm103's i use for overheads from time to time, also into the Control24. One of the features sorely missing from the C24 is mic pads on the pre's. I solved the problem by getting these http://www.shure.com/accessories/a15...blem%20Solvers
Inline pads that have 15,20,or25db selectable attenuation. They work great! Hope this is of some help.

That's an issue with the TLM 103 - When I was using them for overheads, I was using a Manley 40dB pre - I ended up having Manley add a switchable pad between the XLR and the first stage of amplification.

They're overdriving the input (not enough headroom on the Focusrite & the TLM103's are HOT on the output), the Shure Pad is the best way to go since it's able to be used on any number of your preamps. It's definitely not worth the money to get Focusrite to modify the preamp, it would cost far more than $25 (the cost of the Shure pad) to do this even for one preamp. After that the TLM103's should sound pretty good on the overheads.

I know the topic is from 2003, but for the record, when you open the TLM103, behind the XLR connector there are two switches, one is a highpass and the other one is a pad. just so you know.

there's a ground cable linked to the body in the back of the XLR so you can't pull it out by removing only the XLR screw.
you have to take the top off. nothing hard, but take care anyway.

here's a picture of the switches.
