Need Lowdown: API

What are the differences, sonically or otherwise, between new API 512's and older 512, 312 units?

I am trying to decide whether to rack up Brent Averill 312's, API 512's, or OSA equivalent modules (with the attendant ability to add some eq's), a current 3124 or ?

Comments REALLY appreciated. yuktyy

The new 512's seemed a little crispier/cleaner than the Brent Averill 312 and OSA MP1-C (which sound 99% identical to my ears BTW). The 312 types sound a little more rolled off/flat in the top and has more midrange 'growl' so to speak. Not sure if or how the 3124 is different or the same from any of these, I can appreciate the modular nature of all of these above though. I hope this helps a bit, good luck with your search.

I agree with Nathan about the 512c. Even though I really like them, I find they sometimes are a bit on the "hard" side if recording to digital. Package-wise the 3124+ is really great, especially with the mixer option. Quite the audio swiss-knife.

Just some thoughts...

Thank you...

Thanks guys...

Does anyone have any further comments regarding the question of sonic differences in the 512's, 312's, OSA's?

Wow...

Wow, that was the quickest reponse I've ever seen Nathan...
I didn't even have an opportunity to edit my response the way it was 'sposed to be placed>>>

...And I did appreciate your initial response regarding their (512's) crisper/cleaner response.

Thanks again for the input and any further that might be lurking out there.

I had many of the same questions awhile ago in the following thread:

Which API pre?

That should help. There's a bit of sideshow comedy (which I like!) and whatnot in the thread, but some useful insight too.

Jackson...

Thank you verrrry much for the reference, I don't know why I didn't find it when I searched earlier...

So, how do you like them, or which way did you go?

I'm pretty much convinced that 312's in a rack to add some flavor will go nicely...I think with the current batch of Reichenbach transformers (tight bottom, nice highs)...and then save up to put a couple of channels of graphic card for drums.

More?
