So whats your year long goal?

So what is it?

Upgrading equipment?

Paying off loans?

Moving to a bigger space?

Spec deals?

Trying to start working a certain niche?

Where do you hope to be a year from now?

Personally I want to get my equipment all straightened out and get some sort of good recorder with a little more outboard. Then I'll be moving into a real space and will try to spend everything I have on acoustics and putting a nice place together. Once thats done it'll be all about recording a couple bands a week.

I'm not at the point yet where people come to book weeks of time with me, since most of my clients dont have that type of money. But I have plans for a certain a band I recorded a couple months ago. I think they're going to do real well and they want to come do a full length soon. So i'll probably charge them a much smaller fee and work a little spec deal. This is definetly going to be a busy year.

I wanna buy a studio & build a house onto the side of it... If I sold all my gear (tut ) I could buy 2 houses...

That should keep me out of the Soundmotels...

Find a rock band without a glaringly weak player so that I can put out some rock product that is strong. (Can you tell what I've been dealing with as of late?)

Drums - sound awsome! Guitar - Great! Bass - shakey at first but pulls it together! Vocals - I figger the guy can't hear the band tracks in the cans cuz he's at least a whole step flat through the whole song - no **** - it sounds like he's got a melody goin' but he's singing to something other than what we in the control room are hearing. I turn around expecting to see on the faces of his mates expressions of agony like the one I am suppressing. Ayeeeeeee! They're all diggin' it! I know the guitar player can tune his guit. Why can't he hear that this singer is ****e!!! Vocalist comes in to listen thru. All are "totally stoked dude".
I figger I can't even begin to fix this mess if no one can hear ................. Oh, wait, maybe it's jazz......... no it's 'posed to be metal...... 'posed to be in tune......... It's a keeper! Band is stoked cuz singer nailed every tune on the first take..........
Must be coffin nails in their career hopes.
I'm mixing it this week. Plan on getting it down with no vocals and then bringing them in in the last lap so as to avoid destroying what's left of my brain with repeated listening......

What was the question?

Oh. And I wanna dial in some bass traps in the control room.

1) See one or more of my spec deals get some action.

2) Have the studio continue to be an island my freelancer chums can swim to in troubled waters. (it gives me time off!)

3) To 'get out more' - meet...women!

4) To examine outgoings carefully and trim unnessesary expenditure

5) Like Alpha, to not go insane

Long term
1) Pay off the bloody debt.
2) Buy a cool Vocal mic. (more bloody debt)
3) Finish off my rooms. Seems to be a reocurring theme with everyone.
4) Start getting some other engineers to use the place.
5) More gear.
6) Think about selling it all as it is too much, I have no social life.
7) More gear.

1. Spend more time with those that are most important to me.
2. Finish my attic studio (so I can work at home).
3. Finish four albums that are all at 85% completion.
4. Get drunk with Alpha over July 4th week and hopefully check some mixes on his Adams.
5. Get some Adams.
6. Re-tool the tracking room with some fancy finishes.
7. Take a ******* break.
8. Come back from insane.

Since the studio is very well booked this year (lots of long-time album projects) I think I will do a gear upgrade by the end of the year:
- New Monitors
- Better Pres (RNMP, Vintech)
- A decent main reverb processor (Lexicon of some sort), even though I am not an effect *****
- HEDD, Fatso, SPL Charisma or something of the like to warm things up
- A ****ing distressor

I don't think I can afford everything this year, but in a year from now I want to have all that ****...

Otherwise a long term goal is to work only with bands I REALLY enjoy working with. I've realized that most of the time, the bands you don't like because they can't play and ruin your work are decent guys, and the guys who are really good musicians are often arseholes. Working with people somewhere in between is most fun I think.

Oh yeah, working on the room would be fine too. A couple of corner bass traps and a new floor (wood) would be cool.

If you're going to use 'yiddish' terms, please spell them correctly... the word is "putz", it can be used as a synonym for "schmuck"...

To get back on topic... my personal goal for the year is to get the custom 'swing-arm' built for the bike I'm building. It looks like it's going to be the most difficult part of the project... so I know when that's built, fits, and does what it's supposed to do... then all I have to do is send the appropriate pieces out for 'powder coating' and painting... then assemble the motor, and build the rest of the bike...

Once this ride is finished... all will be good with the world, no matter how ****ing insane things get

hey fletcher. i got a friend in this band i record who is BIG into customized bikes. he has been in a bunch of rags with his bike... apparently one of his good friends makes the bikes [and the tracks i just recorded for them might make their way onto some TLC special they are doing on him and his choppers] the guy does some killer work, at least looking at my friends bike. like "6 shooter" handles and post studs etc, suicide shifters etc. the actual bikes he builds are wicked as **** looking. basically just a tube frame with a motor, seat, and controls... wheels too.

1. Enhanced distribution of radio spots (52,000 square miles, but not one major market station...)

2. Reduce the extreme gear envy I have and start using my current/projected tools to their highest potential (although nothing short of a felony will prevent scoring a Great River NV...Fletcher, will ya take $500 for one? ...that's a joke...unless you accept...)

3. Locate, secure, and complete a larger facility.

4. Stop being a bitch tut when things don't go exactly as planned.

5. Lurk silently, absorbing as much knowledge as I can from the folks here.

6. Enjoy myself....If I want to be miserable, I'll go back to working music retail.

Huh... what a forum... New here, hi everybody!

1) Not screw up my first major label engineering/ co- production gig(the first session for a radio single we did didn't have "the vibe" of the a-bit-too-well-done-soundwise-but-not-good-demo... now in the midst of a 14-day tracking session in beautiful Finnish countryside... 8 songs with ROCKING drums, bass and percussion keepers, done live with the rest of the band demoing, and the A&R guy LOVED the basic tracks)

2) Get our own place(maybe called Kekkonen studios after a late Finnish president) up and running within the next month

3) Keep my incredible girl around despite my miserable career choice

4) Play more guitar. Even practice

5) I dunno. pay the rent, I suppose?

6) Learn to love my own brand of insanitydfegad
