Pioneer 4 track reel to reel. Can't recall the model number but the thing was huge and very heavy. Traded that for an Otari SD5050 1/2 inch 8 track. Wish I still had that machine.

No kidding. Used to have an MSR-16 as well. What a piece of crap. Transport was cheapo. Track 1 used to arm itself at random. Lost many takes that way.

A weird Sony Reel to Reel, just two heads (record/play and erase), so I could record one half stereo at a time while monitoring the other in sync. I would bounce while recording and deep beneath the layers of hiss, you could hear a song!

Fostex X-15

The Fostex X-15 4-track cassette recorder. Dolby B & C and a mechanical punch in/out air bulb (similar to those used for cameras). Coupled with a Yamaha RX21 drum machine and Yamaha SPX-90.

I still have MP3s of the "old" recordings and will see about posting one of them.

We used to hook up the old Teac and sit around with acoustic guitars....that's back in the 70's. Not really multi-tracking, but......

Definitely spent some time 4 tracking as well with my 424.

Ampex 1/4" sound on sound, 1967 as a college freshman. Recorded a VoiceOver to vinyl tracks by various artists as part of a seminar. 2 separate tracks, way cool back then. I still have the recording.

Was that an F44? I had one that was a very cool little recorder. AFAIR a consumer deck but built by the professional division.

Bought a Yamaha MD8 many many years ago for my first multitrack. I loved that thing until I actually figured out what I was doing.

I actually still have it. Don't think anyone would buy this thing. lol

DA88, then a second one for 16 tracks, then another for 24. Waiting for them to lock only took three or four seconds but during a punch it was a bit painful.

Then a HD24XR replaced those when I wore out the heads, and that is still what I use.

My first recorder was a tube Revox G36. Used to bounce back and forth and come up with the "song in a waterfall" many of you did. Then I built a studio and got a Big Boy Pants 1" Ampex 440C 8-Track. I have to say, at +6/30 ips, it sounded berry berry good! Many albums and demos on that bad boy.

My first recorder was a tascam 234 rack mount cassette 4-track that had been modified by the military in San Diego. My brother bought it from a navy guy for $150 I think which included a mic. The mic turned out to be a md441 which I still use to this day. The unit sounded good except track four had too much warble for melodic instruments, so I would use it for click or percussion.

a portable cassette recorder.
I would record a track onto it, and then play it over my family's home stereo system while recording the next track on another tape on the portable cassette recorder.

Not exactly a multitrack, but.. sort of.

EDIT:
Oh, ****- I already posted this 2 years ago...
