my first was the venerable tascam 144
then a couple of years later i upgraded to the slutty (at the time) 688
that flipup meter bridge was the shizzle back in the day

My 1st and like many a new Tascam 244. I cant beleive it was near a grand from Ace Music here in town!!....lucky I lived at home back in 1983. Did trade up to that Audio Technica ATRMX64 whatever its called 4 track. Never got my hands on the almighty 388, man...that was the bomb, a reel to reel portastudio. I still want one...!
Only thing left from those days is my Effectron, 79 Strat, and Ovation 12 string.

not counting the little tape recorder thing like you see in elementary class rooms, a little fostex 4 track. I didn't have a mic stand, so I'd sit the mic in my crotch while I played guitar. I got a lot of subcockal region frequencies that way.

The first multitrack I owned was a Tascam DA-88, but we borrowed a Tascam 424 4-track for the two years prior. I loved that machine. We would use adapters and plug 57s and 58s right into the machine, no frills.

a teac 1200 1/4 track stereo w/ sound on sound.
then a teac 2300 1/4 track
then a teac 2340.
then a teac 3340. finally put that out for garbage pick up in 2006 (it broke my heart), after cleaning out my parents's attic.
then a scully 2 and 4 track.
then a tascam 80-8 8 track.
them a mci 24 track.
then studer a-800's and a-80's, and the occasional otari mtr-90.
and that gorgeous last ampex 24 track machine...
and the studer 820's and 827's
then the sony 3324 and 3348. and once, the mitsubishi 32 track digital...

the end.

Teac A-3440 here, cost about $1100. Paid for with a minimum wage job, I recall that was about $2.65 an hour then. Bought a used Lamb mixer, replaced it with a Teac 2A mixer a while later. Replaced that setup with a Fostex 80 and Ramsa WR8112 mixer.

I can't remember the model # but it was the old 1/2 inch Ampex 4 track. (was it the a440?)

No transport logic on that baby. 2 switches and a button required for punch ins.

One of my all time favorite projects was recorded on a Tascam portastudio.

Mine was a Yamaha cassette 4 track. The only EQ was a post playback EQ.

I had a couple of 70s era 2-track, 1/4" reel to reels. I think they were made by Teac or Realistic or something. My dad taught me how to "ping-pong" tracks like the Beatles. What he failed to show me was how to write songs like the Beatles.
