Vintage Compressors

I just registered here after reading a bunch of posts and this seems to be a pretty nice community you have going here.

Im Arnar and i run a small project studio here in Reykjavik Iceland ...... so ... HI!!

I guess you could say im a gear slut even though my kit is mostly
a collection of analog synths and a few outboards.

I have been wondering about vintage compressors after hours of browsing on ebay....(phew... the prices!!)

I have been looking at the 1176Ln partly because thats the only one of these vintage units i have had a chance to try and partly because everyone seems to love it.

What i would like to know however is , Do these vintage units have any current competitiors ?

does the Distressor achive a similar sound?
I actually borrowed an Distressor the other day and i wasnt all that impressed.
Not sure why i didnt like it actually ??

What other units are in the same league as the 1176?

In general the la-4 doesnt seem to be a popular choice , any comments on that?

this might have been discussed before but what the heck...

BTW ...where should one look for these items other then on Ebay?
ureiΒ΄s are hard to find in Iceland

Thanks

Yep - the Universal Audio 1176, and the Purple Audio MC76 are both worthy competitors to the original 1176.

Jakob was referring to his public domain circuts with which someone can build an 1176 clone. I personally think he was doing a service.

Hi Arnar! I do ice climbing and saw some beautiful pictures of Iceland in a couple of climbing rags. It looks like a waterfall climber's dream!

Don't pay those outrageous ebay prices! fuuck The brand new 1176 are supposed to be pretty similar to the original ones. However I would second Dave for checking out the Purple MC76 if you're thinking about buying new. Do you absolutely want something vintage or do you want something good with character be it new or old?

Also, the Audio & Design stuff like the "vocal stressor" and "compex" are FET based units that have a somewhat similar "grab" quality to the 1176 and are usually much cheaper. Maybe you could check Funky Junk in london?

There are plenty of excellent new units available these days.

Hope that can help!

Hi Ultima,

Yes, it requires some knowledge about electronics. But it is also a good way to learn, if you're interested.

On Recording.org they have a - very long, now at #149 - thread about solving possible problems when building this this unit:

http://www.recording.org/cgi-local/u...c;f=6;t=000307

As you can see from this, there is quite a few possible pitfalls. But there'll also be people to help you, I think.

And the result can be really nice :-)

Jakob Erland

BTW: We're not selling anything related to these projects. You'll have to do it all yourself, from PCB's and up, but all the needed information and drawings are available. For free...

I got the same impression.

Please hawk more of that "free" DIY stuff.

Good for you, Jakob.
