Converter Upgrades (Can you hear the difference?)

I have a Delta 1010 box, and I recently bought a Lucid 9624 AD as an upgrade mostly for overdubs. I ran a few acoustic and electric guitar tracks into Nuendo to do some A/B comparisons, just to see how noticable the differnce would be bewteen the Delta's converters, and the Lucids. I'm sorry to say that I could not hear any difference at all. Maybe I'm not very tuned in to the subtle differences in audio niceties, but I really expected to hear a difference.
I guess my question is, are the differences only going to be noticed in aggregate? Meaning, am I getting sonic crud from my Deltas that I won't get with the Lucid? As I lay down more tracks with the Lucid, will I notice a clarity and openness that wasn't there before?
What are your experiences with converter upgrades?

By the way, I really like this site, and I'm glad to be here. I know many of you from Prosoundweb and Massenberg's forum.

Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. Where they'll usually make the biggest difference is in low level signals like the decay of a piano or overheads. Also, as your track count builds up you'll notice less artifacts in the sound as compared to one stereo track. Having a good front end is more important then a good converter most of the time.

Yes the whole thing is cumulative.. it all builds up.. Thing is.. how were you listening?

Via 1010 converters? That could be the problem..

I suggest you give both converters a tough test.. try an acc gtr. record a small passage / perhaps with voice and create 2 versions.. then burn em both to CD and study them in your living room.... and see if you can hear a difference there..

You would be looking for the best

Frequency range
... tone

Complex accoustic material is whats needed on such a test.. bass is too ... er... bass-ic!

BTW I did an additional production & mix job on a track recently started on a 1010 and I thought the material I got to work with sounded great! I was rather flabbergasted at how phat it sounded..

1010 Monitoring

Thanks Jules. Yes I am monitoring through the 1010, and I see what you mean. I have benn really pleased with the 1010. From all accounts, the converters in in are actually pretty good. I haven't yet tracked much with the new unit, but I will be soon. I try what you say. Thanks for the advice.

A/D converters for presonus digimax fs

think i'm posting this in the wrong place. sorry i'm green here.

so i've got a new presonus digimax fs 8 channel preamp. been told the pre's are alright but that the a/d converters are not good. worth swapping the stock converter to a better one? is that even possible?

thinking of buying the TRUE 8 channel pre and call it good. accumilating gear for my home project studio is getting wearysome. realizing how big a world preamps are!

Wow, Schnazy!

On your first post you bumped a thread so old that even Jules is listed as a guest.

Sorry, what was the question?

I don't believe anything anyone says. heh

My standard advice is take a CD you think sounds fabulous, then record it as analog through your current converter. Now play back the recording and compare side by side with the original. How does it sound?
