couch in the live room?

Hey everyone,

I am thinking of putting a couch in my new live room. I don't have a lounge so I'm thinking the live room con do double duty. Like when I'm starting a mix, dealing with frequency, before I need band input. They can go hang and relax etc. The room is a little lively, and I think a couch might help with that as well.

Thoughts?

Seems like a good idea. I've seen couches in the front of control rooms before. Between the console and the live room glass. That seems like a cool thing to do. Maybe in my next room. The only problem I can of is that you'll have to add some tables and stuff, maybe a TV and video games so people can hang in there if it really is going to be pulling double duty. Then you have the problem of people eating and drinking near the mics and stuff. Just something to think about. My lounge doubles as a big iso booth for bass amps and stuff. One time I even recorded bag pipes in the lounge.

Good idea,

I would have a TV / Stereo on a wheel / trolly-rack, when tracking it would face the wall and get covered up but be able to pull out for TV dinners / sports and band hang out times - video games

Also ... Fix up the ability to pipe the mix you are working on to the hi-fi in the live/ rec room.. then they can "tune in" when ever they feel like it and you can have another (very useful) reference system...

But I would definitely have the ability to wheel the 'boob tube' aside and not have it permanently dominate the room like in a living room... that would be bad for concentration / work vibe...

The couch will act as a great bass trap, aim to get a very heavy, leather couch second hand..

My live are has a TV, I need to get a playstation. (I have zero personal interest in V games...)

Not leather - it won't absorb high frequencies. Get a nice cloth covered couch. Then Scotchguard it, or you'll never get the smell out.

Thanks gang! Jules I really like the idea of a TV on a roll away stand. That will probably happen.

Dave--Scotchguard--BRILLIANT!

interesting subject

A smaller level studio that I've been renting out (and may end up contracting half the days of the month give or take a few), is all about couches.

There are two in the control room which are perfect for the band members to mind to their own business without adding to the procedure - or take a nap.

There are also two couches in the big "live room". I find these work great for a few things. For me basically after running back and forth between two rooms (I pretty much wear all the hats on my gigs), It provides me a place to plop down and listen to the sound of the instruments in the room. Basically thats the big deal for me - a spot for me to take a breather while listening to intstruments and being able to focus on the sounds.

The couches wouldn't really be used for any sort of acoustical treatment, basically just a part of the vibe, and extra seats always lets you say "hey man, we're gonna mess with technical **** for a while so just grap a spot on the comfy couch and get ready to rock" when you have band members that feel like adding to things they shouldnt be adding to.

couches just rule, many couches also equal a place to sleep when you have the place blocked out for days and you want to make the most of things - that works for me in my situation sometimes..
