Apogee/PT user's

Hi

If any of you have upgraded to the HD system: how you are finding the "sound of HD"....?

Have you changed your Apogee convertors for new Digi hardware?

I hear a lot about how much people love the HD system and hear big improvements 'even' at 44.1 kHz but is a lot of this perceived improvement a consequence of the change from old to new Digi hardware?

How much/if any difference will there be for Apogee/MIX people going to HD...either staying with Apogee or going with the new Digi stuff...?

TIA

HD provides the best ProTools sound so far ... and I like it a lot. PT III to PT24 was a big step foreward .... this one is MUCH bigger. Finally HIGH quality convertors. Up till HD I did most AD with a PSX 100 ... multi tracks with 888/24's. We realy tested the 192 i/o for a couple of weeks before deciding to have all our AD go through there ... got a second one in as soon as we did.

We are still doing 90% at 44.1. Over the last months we have completed 4 complete projects with everything done with the HD system from scratch. 2 dance projects, 1 poppy lot's of synths project and 1 complete acoustic project ... guitars vocals, bass and drums. The last one especially revealed the true improvements of the system. IMHO not even comparable to what a mix system sounded like.

Said it before and I'll keep saying it .... with the old 888/24 the difference between apogee and digi AD's was there .... and we had to admit it.

The difference is still there .... but no longer a matter of quality imo .... more a matter of taste. Back when we chose to go apogee we tried out several other convertors too .... one of which were the AD's in the sys-6000 which sounded fantastic too. We merely chose the psx because in blind tests we picked it more as the better one.

We did exactly the same thing with the 192. recorded vocals, acoustic guytars, even had a friend hobo player come in to do some tests. at 96 the tests where more obvious but the decission was made at 44.1. The 192 was picked out more then the PSX ... if not .... the PSX would still be there.

I think it's you who has said that the Trak2 holds up well against the new Digi hardware.
Going to the HD system probably isn't going to make much difference to me then at this point if the convertors and clocking are the real reason why most people are pleased with their new HD sound.
Undoubtedly the HD system makes sense in other ways.
I wonder then if the new mix bus, which probably won't be MIX compatible, will be the first crunch point where the sound will be improved internally due to the new PCI cards..?

Hi Renie
I wouldn't lose any sleep over the new mix buss. There is more headroom in 5.3, and the 5.3.1 mixer plugs offer better performance with high track counts. I promise you though, they will not drastically change anything. The improvements are small and I would hesitate to say that there is an audible difference day to day. Overall, the new system is really better and I am very happy with the investment, but I attribute this to the 192 more than anything else. I should say though that I personally have no issues whatsoever with the mix buss in PT anyway. I find the whole argument rather spurious. I think if you want an SSL sound use an SSL, but I dont see how pt can possibly sound like one, or really any console. Different animal. Having said I dont have an 'analogue' background, so achieving an analogue console type sound is not a priority. I can't afford a decent console so I try to focus on what I can achieve with pro tools. I am happy to pay for studio time in an SSL room if that's whats required. Not that I'd really know how to turn the bastard on. I suppose I'm totally inexperienced and really fairly ignorant about mixing on a desk. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Financial reasons make me pause for while on the HD upgrade issue.

I am VERY interested in shifting my operations all over to 96k.

But presently I am more into shuffleing certain items around or 'swapping' things than buying things at the moment.

Survival is more important than gear!

Yeah I am happy with the HD system, been really thinking of starting to do things at 96k as I can hear the diff. Although that means trading the 882 I kept for headphone outs etc for a 96k. So more money.

I am quiet at the moment so I am working fulltime in my IT job to pay off some of this debt I am in, if I had to do the upgrade off paying clients I would not be able to do it. If you have apogees I do not know if the upgrade will make much difference at 44/48k, apart from all the free chips you end up with.

My crystal ball says that PT6.0 will be probably HD only and have auto plugin latency, plugs on the fly etc and be OSX compatiable,
that way they can force people off mix.

A lot of people only seem to be comparing the 96k feature to the other ones... The node problem was my BIGGEST obsticle... I'd always run out of the 256 nodes and have to audiosuite the hell out of everything and hope that it sounded the same. What are some of the other options (besides higher sampling rates) that could entice me to upgrade? (Btw: 192 on a piano... jumpin jesus on a pogo stick... VERY good!!!)

Thanks for the info..I'll sleep better now
It's a gap that's going to get wider as upgrades appear. I need to prioritize other things and am not too sorry about it really. Next year i plan to upgrade my Mac and it's a 99.9% certainty I'll stick with Digidesign's Pro Tools and go to the HD system. I do flirt with the idea of sailing off into ther sunset with Logic and a firewire interface to my Trak 2 with a G5 or 6.....like a real gearslut!!
but I think I'll be like Sandra Dee instead ... heh
Renie
actually 'sailing off into the sunset' is a bit rrr..omantic for a gearslut..

I suppose it really depends on the way you work. If you do a lot of midi, then Logic is a good option, but maybe not the best. I'm sure I'm about to fly in face of public opinion, but the way logic deals with audio is unbelievably frustrating IMHO. (IMHO should be LMSS...license to make sweeping statements ) Having been a logic user for a good while, when I went down the pt slippery slope, I switched to the pt software without hesitiation after briefly trying it. I did try to run logic alongside for a while but thats quite frustrating too. I enjoy the lack of midi features in that it pushes you for a performance. I dont enjoy the lack of tempo related features etc. I also wish pt could stand out a bit more from the crowd, with plug in delay etc etc. But if you are going to jump ship to another sequencer, seriously consider DP. The only reason logic is king of the castle, is because traditionally, it's ability to sync to other systems when cubase was shaky, made it the obvious choice. Cubase now is apparently excellent, and DP seems like the thinking mans kit! Just yesterday I was chatting to a very succesful programmer who was telling me how he and another couple of long term logic users were starting to think again.

Give me pt anyday anyway,

J

If a "G5" PT-happy & pt comes out, I'm the 1st in line (in theory)...
