Lets Start a Discussion: Vinyl Sucks and the Recent Vinyl Trend is Misguided

Lets see if this topic is as contentious as tape vs digital. My own view is that vinyl has always sucked. Any vinyl album quickly starts degrading after being played a few times, and then you have scratches and pops and all kinds of mechanical noise going on. Then there's the bass...a huge amount of it has to be rolled off below about 80 hz or so. I get called a dinosaur for still using and buying CDs but the CD is seriously better sonic quality and durability than any vinyl album played for the first time. OK...in the true spirit of Gearlutz, let the battle begin.

Take that: Vinyl is BS. Complete and utter BS. Swallow it.

:-)

For real, seriously: Vinyl is BS.

Only half truth: maxi-singles don't have to have that bass roll-off. Since 1977 vinyl with sub-bass was printed. The first record was the Chic track "Dance, Dance, Dance".

Quote:
"The most exciting of the 1977 Buddha releases was by far the new New York band created by the duo - Nile Rodgers & Bernard Edwards - namely Chic and their smash "Dance, Dance, Dance". This was also the first song with Sub-bass, which gave the song this rumble bass you could feel hitting your chest at every beat when played at a club. From that time on, everyone started using sub-bass, meaning - keeping the lower frequencies (below 60 Hz) which was earlier removed in the mastering process. But this was actually the only Chic track Buddah got to release, as the band got a big deal with Atlantic Records."
I simply like vinyl for the handling and the album covers. My only audio-reason to love vinyl is that I hate most of the masterings for cd they aren't in any way an accurate reproduction of the sound of the original records.
But this reason doesn't matter much for modern pressings that are mostly digitally mastered anyway.
The real stupid ones among us are those, who buy vinyl cut from digital masters and praise it for the analog sound.

Hi, Rob. We may live long enough to see wire recorders come back in style!

I wish more people could hear DSD. I think that would win over all but the most recalcitrant "analog forever" adherents.

As someone who has to do vinyl restoration jobs from time to time, Vinyl's such a blowhard format

1/4" analog tape is the best audio format ever invented. I much lament its passing to obscurity, and await its long overdue renaissance..

In the meantime, CDA or lossless audio files for me thx. I do collect vinyls (again), but I'm leaving them in their wrappers until I can dub their first runs to 1/4" tape

There is more to the experience of an album than audio quality, and higher fidelity is not always more enjoyable.

there's no 'analog' button on CD players, but until there is, rip the CD, load the entire album into your DAW, and slap on your fave saturation plugin on the master bus

A friend of mine did just this - back in the late 70's he did not have a stereo yet but was buying albums whcih remained sealed until he had is own place and his own stereo

Well he is now a grandfather and all those albums remain sealed. He never bought a real stereo.

He also bought a Martin D18 which he kept in a case under his bed. He never played it and as far as I know, he still owns it and it is probably still under his bed.

Needless to say, I needle him about his stereo and his D18.

I think he may actually retire sometime this year so who knows, maybe he'll finally buy a stereo and open his album collection.

I'd never claim that vinyl or any kind of analog is better than CD, but I like listening to it and I like collecting dusty old records. It's cool to hear that stuff as everyone else did back when it came out. Not super complicated!

Let me whip out my vinyl of Tommy, open it up on my lap, twist a few doobies, and ponder this topic for a couple hours while I read the liner notes.

Screens suck the most

The beauty of vinyl is no screens

***

CDs are beyond stupid at this point

Had such a smile when I threw mine out

Even the sound of an optical disc spinning makes me :(

HD streaming is so much better for digital

And stream into a nice system prob better then vinyl

But … requires screen time:(

Is there a way to record to DSD?

Seeds - the real reason for the popularity of double albums.

Vinyl records are more effective for "early" dates.

I like vinyl records.

Original analog recorded ones.

Especially on a good turntable, Marantz Model 7 preamp and Mcintosh tube power.

Or on any record player.

Also, albums on 1/4" reel to reel tape.

Because it was all analog and I like the vibe and gel.

Hold on, I'll grab those two words (vibe and gel) and add them to my list of words used for vinyl. Thanks!

Yes I have done that as well...but some people on there need to buy themselves a cleaning kit before posting! It can be almost ridiculous with the amount of pops clicks and skips, or whatever...pretty much ruins it for me

i had a QFO purely for listening purposes, but for some odd reason, i kept losing certain pieces of vinyl that i bought. i finally had to get rid of the QFO when Vestax and Technics went under

You can’t argue opinion against culture. CD (and digital in general) failed to generate real culture and community like vinyl always has and still does. Culture and community will always win.
