Tascam 388 track record issue

Henlo all. i have been kindly gifted a Tascam 388 so am in the process of restoring it with the old man, who likes to tinker with old stuff. We've come across an issue that is perplexing and preventing us moving any further with the job, so i need some community advice/help.
basically, when recording to tape track 4 doesnt work. the VU meter doesnt register a signal being inputted and the tape just plays back blank. all other tracks work, and it seems to be an issue with any channel being sent to track 4.
I've made a little youtubes to give a clearer picture of the problem.
We've already tried swapping the pcb's around but still shows same issue.

video

Thanks!

Do you have the manual? Pretty sure it has the schematic.

Have you got a prerecorded tape to see if it is playing back on channel 4?

tascam 388 not playing

Hi everyone, my 388 turns on, fuses are good, belt looks good and moves, the buttons light up when you press them fwd, rew, and play (when you put tension on the tape holder) but the motor/belt does not engage or move. Any ideas where to start?

The only issue I had with mine was down to tensioners. Maybe remember where the adjustments are and try moving a bit to see if there is a difference. The details are in the manual. You access them from the top panel.
In your case it's odd with the counter though.

thanks! I think its definitely the balance of the tensions. I'm cautious to mess with it but I think that's what I'll have to do. I didn't realize that was something that would change over time. The machine hasn't been used in about 20 years.
