I’m engineering a 4-day tracking session at Crossroads Productions in Vancouver, WA. Recording a jazz record. I love this space!

Nice! That's a great looking studio. Stereo C12s on the piano? Man, I'd love to hear how this record ends up sounding. I actually just landed at PDX a few hours ago, spending a few days with the family in Salem... if I had enough time I'd cruise up to Vancouver WA and bang on the door so I could hear that room!

They’re absolutely incredible! I’ve always been a fan of Tannoys, but those mains with the super tweeters and dual 18 subs constitute the best playback system I have ever heard. Other big mains I’ve worked on often sound like an old PA, but these Tannoys hardly even sound like speakers at all. I wish we had that setup at the studio I mix at.

In addition to the like button, what this forum needs is a jealous button.

We already have that. It usually comes in the form of responses such as "Wow that's amazing, I'm SOO happy for you!!!!"

Yeah, I just want to click a button without actually sounding jealous.

@ thismercifulfate – I'm having trouble identifying those mics on the upright, some kind of LDC and some kind of piston ribbon? Any savvy folks know what they are? (Certainly looks like a great-sounding rig, anyway.)

i'm lucky enough to have a 7.1 rig consisting of tannoy system 10 dmt's and wouldn't wanna trade them in for any other speakers!

p.s. i thought those on the pic are double 15"?

Amazing! What a wonderful setup!

They are double 15’s and below each one are 18” subs and also the super tweeters on top.

I too love Tannoys. I still have a pair of pimped little reds in my livingroom. Back in the days I had a pair of FSM, the forerunner of the DMT215s. They could get scaringly loud and yet had great resolution and the incredible stereo image.

Last day of tracking. We had various guests in addition to the core trio that I’m tracking. Two guest pianists, two trumpet players, an electric bassist and a keyboardist on the rhodes.

We did a last-minute vibes overdub. The vibraphone he brought in was pretty terrible - not a quality instrument and in poor shape. I initially set up a pair of Gefell M930's but they seemed to highlight all the flaws of the instrument. I had already allocated all my ribbon mics, so I dug around the mic locker and found that in addition to an RE-20 they also had a PL-20. The foam was all disintegrated and something was rattling around inside the mic but it passed signal. It was a huge improvement but it still needed a lot of TLC, so I ran the mics into an Avalon 2055 and did some pretty aggressive subtractive shelving of everything above 2.5khz - like -10db. I bumped 1khz a tad and added a slight shelf at 450hz. I love those EV mics, they mold like clay when you EQ them aggressively. I finally ran it into a dbx160S, which did a great job of making the instrument less 'pokey'.

What a great studio, session, and setup! I’m hoping to have a jazz session late this month or early next month, but we’ll see how my schedule works out. What’s mics are on the piano?

Recorded a 3-piece, somewhat 90’s punk band session this weekend. I didn’t take a picture of the drums, but here’s the guitar and bass setups in separate isos. Ended up with that Mesa bass head into the Ampeg cabinet and incorporating an RND DI into it.

A pair of C12 clones with Tim Campbell CT12 caps in omni over the hammers and a Neumann TLM193 over the center of the low strings.

Very good call on those RE20s... I can tell the M930s would be stellar on less "pokey" vibes, as you say, but on these they're a bit much. The RE20s mellow them out nicely by comparison. Sounds like a good player!

A Gefell is in my future this year for the home studio, and if it isn't the M990, it'll be a 930.

Started working on the new desk/rack. I have been dreading wiring this thing up as this is my first experience with a patch bay, but it will be so cool when it’s done!

This room sounds much better than my old room. Still on the small side, but in researching, it just happens to be to the smallest golden ratio for acoustics! I can tell you much boominess from my acoustic guitars is gone and they sound much better!

I have six 2’ x 4’ x 2” 703 panels in here now, and will play a bit before putting some super chunks in the facing wall.

Dimensions pleeeze?
And confess: did you somehow mask the speaker cones on a pair of JBL 305s and spray paint them red? It looks wicked cool.

The dimensions of my room are:

8’ h or 96”
9’ 2’ w or 110”
11’ 2’ l or 134”

102.4 ft2
818 ft3

I attached a chart I found online for “golden ratio” spaces, and when I math it out (with the 8’ height being the base of these ratios) I hit it on the money. I don’t know if it’s bs or not (chart from the internet, so who knows?), but it is much better with low end than my previous room:

7'7’ h or 91"
8' w or 96"
9'5’ l or 113"

75.3 ft2
571 ft3

The JBL LSR 305’s I bought at Christmas a few years back and were limited edition in red. At the time, I would have rather have had the black ones, but they were on super special sale and I couldn’t say no. They grew on me in the aftermath.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I plugged your dimensions into this calculator:

and it's pretty good! Thanks for sharing. Your room is quite similar to mine.

My home setup! Just got the desk. Had some Yamaha msp-10’s up there as second monitors. But they’re too heavy for the desk. Looking for another pair!
