I do.
I just finished a 5.1 orchestral recording.
We did it at Warner Bros.' "Eastwood Soundstage".
what a ****ing room!!!!
the orchestra was mic'ed all with a 5.1 approach, we even had an LFE mic, which was tucked away in the farthest reaches of space to capture ALL of the wave.
more later.

I do 5.1 .... not on commercial music recordings yet though. No budget for that over here. I have done a 5.1 "avant garde" music project which was realy freaky and fun.

I'm planning to do it on one of my own future productions. But it will be more of an idealistic thing then it is to make money.

5.1 seems to be very much 'the' standard now, however, is DVD audio going to be very accesible to the consumer in the near future?, in the UK, I have yet to see a dedicated DVD audio CD.

Do you thhink it will take off soon? or remain just for film type stuff?

regards

nathan

Amazon.com now has a dedicated DVD-A and SACD section.

Dang! I deleted my post on this!

In brief:

No budget in my field - alt rock / indie
The DVD player is mostly in family living rooms, so rock kids cant crank it up
I can do it now if I wanted to with my ProControl and a few extra speakers (I tried it one day, it was fun)

I'm pretty sure DVD-A is going to catch on. Soon we'll be mixing all of our music in 5.1 surround.

Is this a contender for oldest GS thread? Also 5.1 mixing for audio, while cool, is more or less useless for all except a very select few artists.

Are we celebrating the 10th anniversary of this thread already? heh

I remember back in '02 everyone was gearing up, getting ready for all of the DVD-A re-releases that would need to be remixed. Surround sound was going to save the industry...

That Amazon DVD-A page is a bit sad....
