ADAT ERROR 7

So I am forced to deal with my least favorite piece of technology yet again. I have a single ADAT i use to to get it from to get the tapes off of satans recording tool and into Pro Tools. I never got a manual for this ADAT when I bought it off Ebay. The tapes I got wont play it and I keep getting first a no good time code eror then error 7 I cleaned the heads once what can I do here. Do I just go rent a machine for the day.

This is a complete wild guess ok .... so don't shoot me if I'm completely wrong. Only used Adat a couple of times ....

Are those tapes that don't play new ones ???? .... if so .... from what I can remember you are supposed to format them before useing them .... although I think you can do that while recording to them the first time too

sorry if I'm completely off though

After breaking out my secret decoder ring and trying to decypher this... what ever the **** this is... I decided to ignore it and move on...

First, try a different batch of tape in the machine and cross your fingers.

The error could be the result of several different things. Cleaning is one, a worn idler wheel is another, dog **** tape could be the problem. If it's not one of the above, it could get expensive.

If you used one of those cleaning tapes tut I would search the web for the proper way to manually clean the headstack, tape path, and replace the idler wheel. I think Alesis may still have the procedure on their web site. If you don't feel confident about doing this yourself, take it to a tech.

Good luck with it.

Error 7 is "dirty heads". So, since you cleaned them, what did you clean them with? Please tell me that you didn't use a Q-Tip. If you did... well, might as well bring it over to TSI and tell Ken what you did. Rather then go into NY and rent a deck call me at the studio and I'll help you out.

If it is a piece of dust on the head, you might be able to knock it off by putting in a tape that you don't care about and hitting fast forward while holding play.

E7 is head error. You have to be very careful with the heads when cleaning. There is a little dot that shows when there is a an error reading the tape, if that is staying on there is a big problem. Do all of your tests and experiments with a tape that is in good condition but has no critical stuff on it. Watch out, they are hungry machines that love to eat tape.

Or just go to Jay's place. I still have a working adat for transfers like yours, but I am in San Francisco.

try fast forward and rewinding it all the way through
if the tape hasent been used in a while this may help
if its been used might try what the others are saying

I just looked it up in my black face manual fast forward and rewind should fix it

means that the error unit correction during play back exceeded a certain threshold.in almost every situation , ER7 is preceded by the advanced information indicator (see previous page )

are you talking about playing back tapes that supposedly have material already recorded on them??

Even with a bunch of E7's you should hear something.

No good time code messages often come from trying to play back 20 bit tapes (ADAT XT) on a 16 bit machine ("blackface")

I wonder if the original poster figured it out 7 years later?

Ha! How did that happen? It showed up on the first page like a new post! That was weird. I did not even check the date, I just assumed it was from today.

Sorry all for the trip down memory lane.
