Buying my first ribbons - R121 or C4038 ?

I'm ready to go with a pair of ribbons. Which should they be and why ?

Hey lucky man, you're in for a treat either way!

I think I would go with the Royer's first because they're a little bit cheaper and they might be a little bit more versatile. (tighter bass, darker/brighter sound variation on different sides, higher SPL handling, slimmer shape make them easier to rig...) Anyway you can't go wrong, the Coles sounds freaking amazing too!rollz

Have fun!

first ribbons

3rd option !!!

check out the new AEA model 84 ribbon for under $1,000. The body style is similar to the RCA 77, but its not an RCA clone like the AEA 78. It includes a massive two inch ribbon that is supposed to provide the sound of the big 44 in a "little" 2lb. mic. All the other AEA ribbons are on the far side of $2k, so this is quite an opportunity.

(all this coming from a VERY satisfied R121 owner)

Hmmm, interesting mics. I just checked them out on Mercenary, I'll have to read more.

Thanks!

If it comes down to it, you could bludgeon someone to death with a 4038 far more quickly than with a 121. Them 4038's 'r heavy!

Hey maybe carrying the coles around in the studio would make up for that workout I keep meaning to do ?

I still love my Coles. after many years of abuse.
I use them for most everything-instrument wise.
get a stereo pair with some sort of bar to mount them.

Tubelover,

I don't have a Royer (yet!). I got a copy of the cd (plus free earplugs!) in my last order from Mercenary. I'm tapped out right now but Royer, Coles, RCA, AEA, Beyer and even Octava are all on my list to check out.

Lynn Fuston's mic shootout cd might be of interest to you too:

The Coles and Royer are distinct enough from each other to justify owning both IMO, especially now with the addition of the active 122 which brings it into a whole different area of useage, especially for the rock and roll guys. I didn't get a chance at AES to stop by AEA's booth, but I have seen a few blurbs about the new AEA 77 edition. I think it may be streeting for $1200 give or take, but don't quote me on that.
