Dipama - Richard Bona

Hi everybody.

I’m coming out. One year lurker – first time poster.

First and foremost, my deepest gratitude to everyone contributing to this great forum!

I have a question about “dry-sounding but not dry”: The song “Dipama” by Richard Bona, IMO this mix is a dry-sounding masterpiece. Anyone know this guy Pete Karam by the way? I’d love to hear more of his work, that’s for sure.

I know it’s about performance, room, tracking and levels, comp, eq and panning, right?
My guess is there are very subtle amounts of reverb/ delay in there too but I don’t hear it. (yes, I’ve read the reverb threads, Russ Elevado’s posts on “Voodoo”, some great posts on dry vocals etc)
To me the synth-pads seem to add the depth of field more than anything else (?)
Now, in particular, the drums, shakers, guitars and leadvocals… Are they completely dry except room ambience? Perhaps just put through doublers/ spreaders? Short delays?
If anyone cares to listen to this track (or the 30-sec. clip on iTunes) I’d love to hear your thoughts/tips on how to achieve this. Even better, if anyone has info about this mix and actual mics, pres, eq, comps, tape/ PT on this one, please share.

Personally, I guess I wouldn’t have the guts (yet) to kill my darlings enough to keep efx out like this.

All the Best/ EW
