Is an EMT 140 still worth getting these days?

Got a line on one locally;stereo solid state/tube.

Just wondering if a 140 is still a worthy purchase these days.

We've been using a KSP-8 at the studio for most reverbs successfully.
Also have a UAD card, but haven't tried the 140 plug.
We're mostly working outside the box and I have to say I've never used a real plate before so I don't know what/if I'm missing anything.

Would a 140 be a nice improvement/addition or would it be redundent?

Thanks,
Pete

Hell yes. If it's a good price, go get it. The UAD plate is excellent, but it's still not quite as good as the real thing. Plus you can go out to the plate when your buddies in the control room and make ghost sounds into it and he will hear it in the control room and think it's haunted. Worth the price of admission alone.
Cheers

hell yeah, unquestionably. the true "cosmic" reverb sound and timeless wonder. it's a simple machine too, so maintenance shouldn't be that rigorous.

Absolutely! Just know that tuning the thing is a bit of a voodoo art. If the tension on the springs suspending the plate is wrong you won't get "the sound".
The UAD card does a great emulation. But if you love that, the real thing will knock your socks off.

They did mono, stereo and quad versions...
My fav....the one I have! The stereo non valve version.

Answer to the question. It is only useful if you want one of the best reverbs around ;-)

YES!

note - every plate I have ever used sounds different.....

but when they are tuned up, and well taken care of, they are AMAZING.

they can be a little noisy sometimes... but the sound is WAY better than any copy of a plate. very 3d and wonderful.

The KSP-8 verbs are awesome. The UAD 140 plug sounds fantastic but a real Plate sounds like a real Plate. A good plate will sound so good it'll make you cry.

A major essential is the physical space you'll keep it in. Some awesome sounding new plates can be found here:

real plates have actual depth, they extend back into the cosmos. the uad is a cool texture, i use it all the time (actually, i use 2, and a tc classic) but it's not even close in terms of the depth.

get the plate. if you don't like it, contact me, i'll take it off your hands.

From the Plate Sonics FAQ:

Q “Does dampening come with the plate?”
A We currently do not provide dampening but there are many ways to dampen the plate—foam, rubber, cushioning, etc. or even the use of noise gating.

Does that mean you can't control the decay time?

This is the perfect way to put it.

In fact mine is nowhere near pristine, it’s noisy, and I’m sure in need of a tuning… but still it does something to a vocal that a plug just can’t seem to do. Not in my opinion anyway.
