The Oberheim Matrix-6 Patch Bible Thread

This thread's purpose is to help anybody who has an Oberheim Matrix-6 get the most of out their instrument. Many people don't know that you can interface this 1984 instrument to a computer and program your own sounds.

Also if you learn something please send your thanks. This was a tough report to write up.

Interfacing Your Oberheim (Obie) Matrix-6

The Obie M6 can be attached to a computer if you purchase a MIDI-to-USB cable. They are approx $40 from any music store. Hook up the cable and install the drivers properly (drivers can sometimes be a pain, especially if you don’t reboot after installing).

Initializing Your Synth to Receive Computer Data
Knowing the Layout
  • Hit MASTER on your keyboard to go into Master Edit mode.
  • Use the ARROW KEYS [left or right] to find the parameter we want to change
  • When we want to edit a parameter, hit the grey STORE button.
  • You can now use the ARROW KEYS or the NUMBERS (depends on the setting) to change values of this parameter

Initialize your keyboard with the following modifications
  • Connect your Oberheim Matrix-6 to your MIDI-to-USB adapter!
  • Might as well connect both MIDI ports! In my case, I have a Roland UM-ONE.
  • "CONNECT TO MIDI IN" cable connects into MIDI IN port
  • "CONNECT TO MIDI OUT" cable connects into MIDI OUT port

You are now ready to import or export MIDI channels to your Oberheim Matrix-6!

Costs approximately $39 CDN for a full version. But it’s the absolute BEST program to get if you want to custom edit your patches. Very straight forward program. Interacts extremely fast with the Oberheim Matrix-6.

1. To register your program to the FULL VERSION:
a. Click on the “?” mark located on the top right of the menu options of the program.
b. Select “About OB-6000”
c. Fill in the following information to register to the full version

  1. Launch as Administrator
  2. Configuration
  3. You must select your Oberheim Matrix-6 and MIDI parameters under “Options”
  5. After selecting Matrix-6 you'll notice that the check mark beside your MIDI Input device goes away (and there was never any check mark next to the MIDI Output too)...What you have to do it PRETEND THAT IT IS INVISIBLE!! LOLOLOL
  6. Click on your MIDI Input and MIDI Output device as if the check box was never there
  7. Store all your Synth patches to your Bank just in case! (READ BANK EDITING SECTION)
  8. Click on START EDIT. When you see OB-6000 READY, you are ready to rock.

You can bring up a list of all patches under the Patch Bank by navigating to Bank>Edit Patchbank. Or by simply pressing F1.
You can import your Matrix-6 patches to this bank list (but only if MIDI is setup properly)

Patch Editing
Click Edit>Edit Patch or simply Press F2 to bring up the Patch Edit page.
Effect Rack Editing
Click Edit>Effect Rack or simply Press F3
Modulation Matrix Editing
Click Edit>Modulation Matrix or simply Press F4

Matrix2001 v2.51d
No longer on internet. Can be acquired by third party and have unlimited access with a “Run As…” exploit. Make sure you pick the “Run as…” date as a day 30 days after your initial install date. Otherwise this exploit will not work.

M2001 is clearly outdone by the versatility of the OB6000 program, and outshined by the SynLibMX6’s extensive library collection. Nevertheless, this is a useful program to have in your back pocket if you are a Oberheim Matrix-6 owner.

I can upload the file with the crack on this site at a later date, or remind me here if I forget...
  • Launch Matrix 2001
  • Ensure settings are the same as mentioned above in the MIDI Setup.
  • Select Edit>Initialize
  • Launch bank manager
  • Right click on an <empty> patch location.
  • Select "Editor-to-Bank"
  • If done correctly, it will call it BNK3:09
  • Right click and Rename it
  • Right click again after completing renaming it and select "Bank-to-Editor"
  • Save (?) if desired to Harddrive
  • File>Upload. Then check your Matrix-6's Patch Select number you uploaded it to.

For patches on the Matrix-6 or Matrix-6R the first thing you should check out is SynLibMX6. This is the absolute BEST program because of its libraries. The sheer amount of libraries you can use in this program totals around 5000+.

Install the program to C:\Program Files\synlibmx6.
I’ve found that installing this on another directory works fine, but for simplicity’s sake we will go with the default install directory.

Extract the two MX6 library banks that are included on the website to the same directory:
  • m6 factory sounds -
  • m6 user sounds -

Running the Program
Ok, this is where this starts to be a pain in the ass. This program sometimes does not work properly when running the executable. I was running this in a Windows 7 Ultimate computer.
1. There sometimes can be some errors. Such as:
  • Alloc Library
  • EAccessViolation
2. If you get any one of these errors when launching the program, it will NOT work.
3. Even if your program launches, you MUST do the following to ensure it is fully launched into
4. Right-click on the region highlighted in RED (If ever you right click and the program crashes, it was NOT fully launched into memory.)
5. Select “Load Library”. It works if you see this!

Here are some tips you should follow to get the program working in Windows
  • Right click on the executable and select “Troubleshoot compatibility”
  • Doing this selected “Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 3)” and had some warning messages pop up
  • Right click on the executable and select “Compatibility”
  • Here I changed the Priviledge Level (on the bottom) and check marked the “Run this program as an administrator” button.
  • Sometimes no matter you do, you will just keep getting those two errors: Alloc Library, EAccessViolation. I find that sometimes if you just keep launching the program, and changing the Compatibility around to different Operating Systems fixes the issue. It will launch eventually just be patient and tinker with it
  • Just keep launching it if it fails. Eventually it will be put into the proper memory location and will run.

To program your Oberheim Matrix, right click on the BNK1:00 area. This is not intuitive at all, who the **** programmed this.

This will bring up a list of all parameters you can use to apply Analog Synthesis. If you have your MIDI properly configured and have a MIDI to USB interface connect to your synth, you can program patches extremely easy.

Changing settings on this menu should immediately be applied to
your synth. You should be able to hear (output jacks) and see (display screen) these settings being changed on your Oberheim Matrix synthesizer as you configure settings. Play a few notes to make sure

Changing Banks
You can change banks simply by clicking on the text of the bank. In this program you are given two banks to work with. You can tell which one is active by the one with the yellow font.

Bank Settings
By right-clicking on the Bank name, it will bring up all Bank information. THIS IS IMPORTANT ****. Banks
are completely different from Libraries!! Don’t get this confused…
1. You can load up a library by right clicking on the empty panel on the far right
2. Select "Load Library" and browse to your .MXL file
3. All sounds from that library will be here.
4. You can select them (with difficulty) and load them into your banks. Once ready, you can send
them to your Matrix-6 by right clicking and selecting "Send Bank to MIDI" as before.
Load Bank
I would suggest to load up some custom Banks that are most likely saved on your computer. Such as:
  • Alex Matrix 6.MX6
  • demo1.MX6
  • demo2.MX6
  • etc.

Save Bank
If you’re satisfied with the custom bank you’ve created.

Delete Bank
If you’re pissed off with the custom bank you’ve created.

Get Bank from MIDI
Important! If you ever want to take a snapshot of all the patches that’s currently stored on your Oberheim Matrix-6, hit this button and your MIDI to USB interface with transfer all the patches into a BANK memory. Here you can Save it for later, or manipulate it if desired.

Send Bank to MIDI
Important! If you ever are satisfied with the Bank you have been working on then it’s time to upload it into the Oberheim Matrix-6 memory. Hitting this button will cause all 1-99 patches to be re-written to the Bank’s patches. If the Bank has any empty spots (undefined patch edits), then it will replace this Patch # with an Initialization Patch simply called “Oberheim”.

Save as Systex
As far as I know the Save as Sysex button doesn’t work.

Continuous Controllers on M6 (CC)
To use CC on the Oberheim Matrix-6 it is best to use PEDAL 1 and PEDAL 2.

You can go to MASTER > 06 to see what CC channel PEDAL 1 is set to. By default it is set to Channel 7

You can go to MASTER > 07 to see what CC channel PEDAL 2 is set to. By default it is set to Channel 64

Now that you know what channel to use to control PEDAL 1 & 2, it is best to map PEDAL 1 & 2 on your patch's Modulation Matrix to the desired effect.
For example: If I wanted to use PEDAL 1 to control the VCF Cutoff frequency, I would assign PEDAL 1 to VCF Cuttoff

You can easily do this in OB6000 software:
  • Press F4
  • Assign PEDAL 1 to VCF Freq
  • Bump up the value just a little bit (not necessary but good to kick it awake)
