True matched pairs really aren't bullshit. When measured in an anechoic chamber they should have the same frequency response, sensitivity, signal to noise ratio and polar pattern. But...whether anyone can really hear it is another story. Like you said any manufacturer that makes a good product should have tolerances so low that matched pairs aren't necessary.
