and if everyones ear hears differently i.e. "john q musiclistner" then that means there really cannot BE any standard for monitors because no matter how flat they claim to be..if everyone in the end is gonna hear things differently, then as a mix/master person the only person your really mixing for....is you....lol
Best thing I did recently was go an listen to several different well known and often recommended monitors. Did they all sound the same? Hell no! heh Each brand has different characteristics. The higher the price bracket the better of course but a pair of focals and a sub were way over my budget.
Compromises are made on cheaper monitors, I read that the atc scm300asl are truly flat but cost 30k so I say find the best monitors you can for your budget and if you can take the time out to listen. I tried to be objective in my purchase and felt that the yams were the most honest sub £500 monitors and had similar qualities to the more expensive focals.
It's a weird one on the bass though. Sit in normal range and it's not there, sit back a few feet and I can feel it in my chest and through the floor! It's the same on kicks as well, I can hear the shape of the kick where the lower mid seems to be missing otherwise which someone else did mention. Basically i'm burning then in for the helluvit but at the same time i'm listening for the issues that others have had. Everyone can't be wrong!
They project unlike any other monitors i've heard before and I think that might be why there is such opposing opinion. I need to get some treatment in next and see how that affects things but so far I am happy with the yammies. Ymwv.
