Glad to see-read that others are starting to hear the same things I hear from these speakers. They cover the entire spectrum pretty well being that they have 8" drivers which helps with balance overall but they are too bright in the mids and highs...theres bright and theres detailed-and these just sound bright to my ears. Not sure if I'd agree that they don't have any bass like one of the posters above and I'd say its average-comparable to other 8" monitors in its class but not really accurate either-more like a rough estimate. I have Rp8s and really don't care for these all that much either-but are fantastic for their current purposes-as a Roland Handsonic monitor-loud, powerful and clear enough. I wasn't really happy with them as monitors and for music playback-kinda dry and cloudy.
I use and like BX5a Deluxes and combined with a sub and room treatment these are a very good combo. Theyre very affordable and you can always mix bass on headphones and add a sub later. I like them at low listening levels-very detailed and enough bass for smaller rooms. Not perfect monitors by any means-and a little bright at high volumes and rooms with little damping but just love the clarity and detail in the mids and the small footprint is great for bedroom studios.
The new Mackie MRIIs would be worth listening to and considering-though I havent. And the JBLs arent bad-good bass and overall balance but not incredible detailed from what I remember-at least relative to BX5s.
I love the VXT6 and VXT8 (even more). Thats my choice for under a grand-by a mile. These are a step up than all the monitors discussed above. Adams are in the same league but not my cup of tea.
